About The Wine

The Head Red Shiraz is considered the trailer or preview to each vintage of the Head premium single-vineyard Shirazes.

This is made from the barrels that barely missed the cut on the SV Shiraz; The Blonde; The Brunette and The Contrarian. Made with all the love and care that go into his top-flight releases, Alex Head releases this as a younger wine as something to enjoy whilst waiting for his premium releases to mature.

It's plush, full-bodied yet built for early drinking in the best possible way. For easy-drinking but serious Barossa Shiraz, it's hard to go past this release.

About Head Wines

Alex Head has had what you might call a meteoric rise through the Australian wine industry. In his short career as a producer he has been heralded as one of the best Young Gun Winemakers, not only in the Barossa but the whole country.

With no formal training as a winemaker, the purity and balance inherent in the wines are amazing.

Alex has a passion for the old vineyards that populate the Barossa. With a keen eye for a good site, Alex has put together a formidable portfolio of vineyards which produce simply outstanding renditions of Shiraz and Grenache year-in, year-out.

These are some of the most exciting wines in the Barossa.

Additional Info

From The Producer

HEAD RED is a barrel cull from Barossa vineyards including 'The Blonde', ‘The Brunette' and ‘The Contrarian’ single vineyard wines. It allows a pre-view of the vintage quality to come and keeps the quality of the single vineyard wines as high as possible. The wine always receives 12 months barrel age in a multitude of barrel sizes allowing the vintage and terroir to show clearly. It’s also a chance for me to play with the old adage, 'The whole is greater than the sum of its parts'. Certainly the best value and most traditional wine style of the portfolio.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Blackcurrant, chocolate, some sage and floral perfume. Dark and quite juicy, some chocolate orange, tannin a bit ropey and drying, but other elements are good. It’s a solid and chunky wine, offering flavour and a robust personality." Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

The Wine Front

" Spice laden red set to over medium weight with a dry-reddy, twiggy-toasty oak profile set through the dark berry and spice characters. Indeed, the finish is all woody pucker, firm, dusty, drying, a little off the pace of lusher, friendly Barossa styles, and that may be good for some. It feels a bit forced and firm, missing some seduction." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"80/20% Eden/Barossa Valley; 95/5% shiraz/cabernet sauvignon, from vines on average 30yo. Wild fermented; matured in 5% new French oak barrels. Fruit integrity over oak and artefact is a winning recipe. Glossy and vibrant Barossa shiraz, brimming with spicy black fruits of all kinds, fresh licorice straps, neatly supported by dark chocolate oak and finely textured tannins. There's a lot to love about it – not least the price." - Tyson Stelzer (Halliday Wine Companion)

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). PLEASE NOTE that we are currently seeing significant delays in the Australia Post delivery network. Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities. Orders are still arriving safe and sound but you may notice slower delivery times and less frequent scanning updates than usual.

FaQs

Do I have to order in dozens? No, please mix it up! You can order wines in any quantity and variation you like. You can order 1 bottle or 50. We challenge you to make the ultimate mixed pack of wine!

Are there volume discounts? No, our pricing is designed to be the best in market already - no marking up and then discounting down! For very large orders (weddings, etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call.

Do we price match? Yes, within reason. Everyday low & consistent pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll consider matching it. We'll even retrospectively issue you store credit if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. Our price match policy can be seen here.

Can coupons and discounts be stacked? No, only one discount or coupon can be applied to an order at once.

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 1300 668 385 or hello@differentdrop.com and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.

Does Different Drop have a physical store? No. Just an a warehouse/office. We occasionally do events however, so sign up to our newsletter or follow us on instagram to stay in the loop.

Can I special order a wine you do not sell? If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
