About

About The Wine

As soon as you take an initial smell of the Frankland Smith Cullam Syrah, you know you're in for a wonderful experience.

The lush mix of aromas spans a wide spectrum of fruits – black, blue and red – displaying some violet florals and, with the advance of a few years, some bottle-age characters like meatiness, leather and spice. This isn't a big and blustering Shiraz like you'll get from the Barossa Valley, but one where the rich flavours unmistakably stem from its cool-climate origins.

There is lovely finesse in the wine and it will develop more captivating aromas and flavours with some careful cellaring.

About Frankland Estate

Frankland Estate are one of the leading producers in the Frankland River region. Family owned and operated since 1988, their major focus is on certified organically grown fruit that reflects its terroir rather than the hand of the winemaker.

Their cool climate Rieslings are regarded as some of the best in the region and the country with several single vineyard releases that could be a contender for Australia's Best Riesling.

Frankland Estate is cutting a mean wave through the industry and picking up a lot of recognition in the process.

Vineyard Notes

Fruit for this wine was sourced from the original east west facing “Winery Block” planted on Isolation Ridge in 1988. The vineyard is planted on undulating northern and eastern facing slopes and has duplex soils of ironstone gravel and loam over a clay sub soil. The Isolation Ridge Vineyard is managed under organic certification (ACO certified organic since 2009), a sustainable practice that maximises the unique characteristics of the Isolation Ridge Vineyard to be expressed in this wine.

Winemaker Notes

This wine was fermented in small shallow open pot fermenters. Whole berries are used, and fermentation is initiated straight away, hand plunging is conducted to keep the ferment even and as gentle as possible, minimising extraction. Temperatures typically do not exceed 26C through the 10 – 15 day ferment. Some additional maturation on skins occurs until tannin integration and balance is seen. This wine was aged for 15 months in 3,500 litre French oak foudre. The small addition of viognier (5%) and Mourvèdre (1%) add to the wine’s complexity.

Blend : Syrah (94%), Viognier (5%), Mourvedre (1%)
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2035
Bottle Size : 750ml

The Real Review

"Bright, deep purple colour with a fresh and spicy aroma of cool-grown shiraz, the fruit doing all of the talking. White pepper, blue fruits, violets, dried herbs. The wine is elegant but full-bodied, the tannins tightly coiled and supple. A gloriously aromatic, elegant cool-grown shiraz." Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

The Wine Front

"Top of the tree Frankland Estate wine. Soft, gentle, detailed red of spice, savouriness and very pure feeling and unadorned fruit character. Has some pretty sweetness balanced nicely by fresh acidity, a good deal of fruit concentration, and a general sense of elegance comes to mind. Bright finish, a little crunchy, says hold off drinking for a year or so. Excellent wine." Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
