About
We just let it do its thing - it's made as an expression of the vineyard.

Matthew Rorick, Winemaker

About The Wine

Matthew Rorick is a dab hand at bringing delicate yet energised aromatic blends to bottle from his homeland of California. Here he brings those same processes to the Barossa with dazzling results.

The Black Sallad is a co-picked and co-fermented field blend of aromatic varieties from the old and much revered Stonegarden Vineyard in the Barossa Valley planted in 1855.

This sees Black Frontignac combine with Riesling and some other bits and pieces to create a slatey, perfumed and mineral-charged orange wine of finesse and thirst-inducing charisma.

A rock n' roll Barossa white/amber wine if ever there was one.

About Forlorn Hope

Matthew Rorick is one of California's rockabilly winemaking superstars.

His love for the unloved and obscure varieties dotted around his homeland combined with his stripped-back, bare-knuckle winemaking style have seen his small batches of 'Rare Creatures' develop a feverish cult following in the US of A.

In 2017 Rorick dropped into the Barossa Valley to catch up with friend and colleague Jaysen Collins (Massena Wines). Some sexy old-vine fruit made itself available. Rorick couldn't resist the chance to make a couple of wines from this alien patch of earth. And so, Songs From Mars was born.

A palpable driving energy pulses through the veins of both the white and the red release. A ludicrously small production of both make these indeed rare birds of a different feather.

They will be gone before you know it.

From The Producer

A field blend from an 80 year old mixed planting at the Stonegarden Vineyard in Eden Valley (Muscat, Riesling, Crouchen, and Verdelho, with small amounts of Sauvignon blanc and a Mataro vine or two). Originally planted in 1855, the soils consist of a thin loam top layer over red clay shot through with quartz and mica schist. Now farmed organically by owner Glenn Monaghan, we are honoured to be able to work with fruit from a site with roots deep in Eden Valley’s viticultural heritage.

Hand picked, destemmed, and fermented on its skins in an open-top vat for five days, receiving twice daily punchdowns. After five days of skin contact it was basket pressed down to 300L barrique, where it finished fermentation and rested for 10 months. Fermentation was achieved with native yeast, and no additions save minimal effective SO2 were added. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Blend : Muscat, Riesling, Crouchen, Verdelho, Sauvignon Blanc, Mataro
ABV : 12.20%
Closure : Cork
Drink Until : 2024

DDS review

Musky lift to open, dried lavender and potpouri, a dab of honey, some lychee and lemon rind. Much more orange this year, it skates through the mouth, balanced precise and gently textural. Minerally acidity and a fine powdery grip gives definition and a little more under the hood. Loads of crunchy tannin and cgreat structure. Crackerjack aromatic white is the take away. - Different Drop Wine Team

"Orange-golden colour. Like. Super attractive scents of ripe stone fruits, pot pourri, mandarin, light clove and faint herbal scents. Juicy, plump and soft in the palate, a funky edge, whatever that is, some richness of fruit flavours coupled to dry herb, chalky-powdery tannin webs and cooling acidity underlying. A generous wine, luscious in a way, but refreshing too. Great thing." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
