About the Wine
Elderton is a family affair, run by the Ashmead family since its inception. Their eponymous premium Cabernet Sauvignon is a firmly structured wine, but keeps in balance with smoothness and a bit of herbaceous freshness.
The little Cabernet Sauvignon fruits from 75+ year old vines were hand harvested, fermented in open concrete fermenters, then pressed - the juice then spent 18 months in new French oak hogsheads and puncheons, went through full malolactic fermentation and aged further in bottles./
The result? A rich, decadent Cabernet Sauvignon that keeps an air of softness about it, with impeccably integrated oak. Well worth a try for any lover of premium expressions of this variety - or pop it in the cellar if you're the patient type.
About Elderton
The Elderton estate had a rich history before being purchased by Lorraine and Neil Ashmead in 1980 - the vineyard planted in 1894 by German settlers then purchased in 1916 by Samuel Elderton Tolley (who named the estate Elderton), until it eventually became derelict around 1975, in the early years of the vine pull.
The Ashmeads undertook three years of restoration on the estate and in the vineyards, and at the end was the birth of Elderton Wines. The second generation of the Ashmead family, Cameron and Allister, are now running the business, with Julie overseeing viticulture and winemaking. They are passionate about continuing the traditions that their parents began, and about using sustainable practices, in the hopes that the next generation can carry on the legacy.
