About The Wine
From a plot that sits at about 400m elevation in the southern part of St Joseph, this is a serious wine full of depth that pulls together all those special characteristics that make Syrah from the Northern Rhone so epic.
It has the spice and floral aromas of Cote Rote, that cool white pepper kick of Crozes Hermitage and the muscularity of St. Joseph and Cornas. Youthful and vibrant with summer berries, liquorice, pepper and graphite flavours, and a silky but present tannic structure.
Savoury and ripe, this is Northern Rhone at its best…even before you look at its ridiculous value-for-money price.
About Domaine Des Pierres Seches
Though he didn’t begin making wine until 2007, and despite his origins in Alsace-Lorraine, and training in Burgundy, Sylvain Gauthier, has rapidly emerged as one of the young guns of the Northern Rhone.
A steadfast believer in the benefits of organic viticulture, Sylvain is intent on making the world stand up and take notice of his pure full-bodied expression of Syrah.
Working his vineyards by hand, ploughing with horse, and manually controlling weeds in the vineyard, his hands are in control of all elements of the winemaking process from budburst to bottle.
Despite time spent under Northern Rhone icons Chapoutier and Stephan Robert, and the fact that he is a second generation vigneron, Sylvain is forging his own unique path with a singular focus; producing pure, natural, clean and vivid 'real' Rhone Syrah.
