About The Wine

Those with a penchant for Pinot Noir and Mornington Peninsula will most likely have had a wine by Tod Dexter.

It may have been under the Stonier label, it may have been under Yabby Lake; regardless, it would have been memorable. Dexter is his own.

Tod and his wife Debbie planted this east-west vineyard in Merricks back in 1987 and have been making their own wines from it for over a decade.

The current release of Pinot Noir is lovely and was Huon Hooke's top-rated Mornington Pinot from the 2019 vintage.

Treat yourself to a bottle of this and discover the beauty of the Peninsula, this is magic stuff.

From The Producer

Hand-picked fruit was destemmed without crushing and elevated into small open fermenters. The must was left un-inoculated for 2-3 days and when fermentation was observed cultured yeast was added.

One fermenter was put aside for whole bunch fermentation and this component is 13% of the final blend. Fermentation temperatures peaked at around 32°C and during fermentation the cap was plunged up to 2 times per day. 2-3 days after fermentation was complete, the must was gently pressed and transferred into French Oak puncheons (25% New, 20% second use 12% third use and 43% older) where MLF occurred before winter. It was bottled late December 2018, 9 months after harvest..

Critic Reviews

The Real Review

No. 1 Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir - "Bright, medium to deep red/purple colour. The bouquet is meaty/charcuterie-like and spicy, earthy, smoky, while the palate is quite full-bodied for a Mornington pinot and it fills the entire mouth, resonating long on the aftertaste. There are plenty of tannins which are supple and fine-grained, the finish persisting long with savoury characteristics. An ample, generous pinot with stacks of flavour, It will richly reward a few years' cellaring too." - Huon Hooke (The Real Review)

The Wine Front

"The Dexter family vineyard was planted in 1987. Tod Dexter himself has 40 years of winemaking experience. I think he must have started making wine at aged 12.  Excellent release. Firm, spicy and a touch meaty, in a positive way, with graphite and succulent poached strawberry flavours putting on a confident display. There are mint notes here and a touch of warmth too, along with plum, along with roasted nut. Balance here is key; everything here feels poised and placed with care. It’s a lovely drink now but it will age." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"While there's no shortage of flavour, tannin or acidity, Dexter wines tend to be in a tighter, almost lighter frame. As always, the aromas are wonderful – wild strawberries and an abundance of cherries, all dusted with Middle Eastern spices, including sumac. There's cherry liqueur across the palate and a vibrancy for enjoyment now, yet will reward the patient." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)

If your order is placed before 12pm we’ll get it on the truck that day. Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). PLEASE NOTE that we are currently seeing significant delays in the Australia Post delivery network. Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities. Orders are still arriving safe and sound but you may notice slower delivery times and less frequent scanning updates than usual.
