About the Wine
Petit Chablis is a classification for Chardonnay from the Chablis region which often comes from younger vines grown in less ancient soil on the tops of hills, rather than the better sites for the more premium Chablis AOC, Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines.
However, it's best not to think of Petit Chablis as a "lesser" wine, something which Clotilde Davenne has well and truly proven with her Petit Chablis, which punches well above its weight. Grown on an incredibly steep hill (which apparently no one else wanted), Davenne has shown she could master the site.
What you notice most about this wine is its freshness and vitality, with beautiful stone fruit flavours, saltiness and minerality. Enjoy with cheeses.
About Clotilde Davenne
Having not come from a winemaking family, Clotilde Davenne had to forge her own path. Having studied oenology in 1986, she then did vintage in California before returning to France to work for the famed Jean-Marc Brocard in Chablis. After working with him for 17 years, Davenne had accrued excellent knowledge of the region's terroir and styles.
In 2005 she started her own label, with a small plot designated Petit Chablis, mainly because of its northern exposure (seen as a negative). Since that time, she has amassed more vineyards and gained an excellent reputation due to the high quality of her wines. No oak is used for cellaring them, resulting in wines that are fresh and pure.
