2019 Chateau Acid Chardonnay

Central Ranges, NSW

Psychedelic alt expression of NSW Chardonnay. Skin contact, amphora, some barrel ageing. Experimental and excellent drinking.

Out of Stock

Outside the chardonnay canons and wildly delicious.

About The Wine

Here is an exhilarating expression of Chardonnay from an organic farm in the Central Ranges of NSW.

This is Chardonnay pushed in a few different way. The first half of the fruit is directly pressed straight to barrel to ten months, a very conventional approach.

The second half of the fruit however, sits on skins for ten months inside a clay amphora before being pressed. The two parcels are then blended together and then it is rested in bottle for another 10 months before release.

It's a head spinning expression of the variety. It's full flavoured, saline, tactile and a little salty with thrilling acidity. A great unique take on Chardonnay here for natty fans.

From The Producer

Faced with the scarcity of fruit from our Vermentino block over the past few years, we decided to make use of the Chardonnay from the block next door, all part of the same original 1997 planting that we take Shiraz from. These vines have also been certified organic since planting (23 years no less) part of the commune of organic farms that nestle into the river bend on these hills looking towards Mount Canobolas and the town of Orange, NSW. This block is East-facing, rather than North like the other blocks - good news for Chardonnay as it doesn't get roasted in January, which has obviously been fucking hot the last few years.

The wine is made in a similar way to Acid Bianco, half spends 10 months on skins in the same terracotta amphorae, half direct pressed to old oak barriques, topped once but otherwise untouched, bottled by gravity, no so2. Been in bottle for 10 months and very stable, we're now ageing our whites at least as long in bottle as in barrel to allow for proper development and complexity.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Scents of green apple, pear, wet clay, jasmine and faint sea spray characters. Lifts on white balsamic and green apple tang, electric acidity, chewy in texture. That core of acid is incredible, salty and blisteringly fresh, a laser beam through the wine. The finish, all salty and tangy and a star burst of joy. Outside the chardonnay canons and wildly delicious." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
