About

About The Wine

If you have never tried the Billy Button wines, this is a great introduction to what Jo Marsh is all about: Alpine Valley fruit masterfully handled, delivered with incredible value.

Over the last few years this has garnered a reputation as one of the most drinkable Barberas in the country. The key here is balance. Where other Aussie Barbera can be a little wishy-washy this hits the nail on the head. Jo says, "It is now one of my most popular wines and one of my most consistent" and it rightfully has been the fastest of her range to sell out each year.

Don't miss out on this charismatic little red from one of the Alpine Valleys' finest.

About Billy Button

Billy Button is the charming Alpine Valleys based project of ubertalented winemaker Jo Marsh, now helped by her winemaker husband Glenn James and young winemaker Alex Phillips.

Billy Button focuses primarily on producing small batches of alternative varieties from good local growers in their small patch of Victoria. The team explores varieties that are rarely seen in the Australian landscape - you can find anything from Schioppettino to Verduzzo in this eclectic range.

Jo's gentle touch in the winery makes for beautifully balanced wines that show great texture and vibrancy. The Billy Button range is a little gem of North East Victoria. It's one of the more unique wine ranges in the country and the perfect place to begin your exploration of alternative varieties.

From The Producer

The first vintage of this wine was in 2014 and it was a bit of a fortunate accident.

I wasn't planning to make a Barbera that year, but close to harvest the growers Tony and Josie Ferraro asked me to take a look at it. I've always loved the Italian Barberas that Italian Barberas that I've tried, but had never really been impressed by the Australian examples. At this stage the fruit had no home, and I hate seeing good fruit being left on the vine so I thought I'd give it a go.

And what a success it turned out to be - that first vintage sold out in 3 weeks! It is now one of my most popular wines and one of my most consistent.

The Wine Front

"Jo Marsh’s (aka Billy Button) wines are always so fresh, so well balanced. This is juicy with red- and black-cherry fruit flavours though fragrant herbs play key roles as do twiggy, more savoury characters. We get the juice, we get the fruit, we get the herbs and associated spices. It’s beautifully balanced in the best of ways; it’s both generous and exuberant but it’s also controlled. It drinks, as a result, like a charm." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"Machine harvested, destemmed, hand plunging twice daily, wild-yeast fermentation, extended time on skins, pressed into a combination of Flexcubes and old oak, maturation on lees for 8 months. An interesting follow-up to the excellent '18 release, with greater ripeness evident, pushing the already plush style into luxuriant territory. Black cherries, wild raspberries, dried herbs and a dusty earthiness greet the drinker, but while the fruit intensity rises in '19, the same degree of medium-bodied structure and fineness is also evident, thanks to some juicy, fresh acidity." -Jeni Port (Halliday Wine Companion)
