Tense but generous. It’s a wine of contrasts and intensity. An excellent release here.

About The Wine

Bannockburn Chardonnay is one of the benchmark white wines of the Geelong region.

It's made from dry-grown fruit off the Bannockburn vineyard, it's whole bunch pressed and wild yeasts, and then aged for 18 months on its lees in a combination of stainless steel, older oak and just a small portion of new oak. This extended time on lees and in barrel adds so much texture and complexity to what is beautifully pure fruit.

It's just gorgeous - aromatic, powerful, structured and balanced. A wonderful wine for a special occasion, and great either now or with a few years under its belt.

About Bannockburn

For decades, the Bannockburn vineyard has been producing Burgundian-inspired wines which truly reflect the winery's unique terroir.

Originally planted by the legendary Gary Farr, the wines that comes from this unique vineyard in Geelong show a rare sense of place. The ancient riverbed soils impart a distinct saline character and a power which makes the wines from this place immediately identifiable.

With the arrival of new head winemaker, Matt Holmes, the next chapter of Bannockburn's long history has commenced.

New ideas, a fresh take, the start of something new and exciting for this famous patch of earth.

From The Producer

This wine has consistently been rated as one of Australia’s best Chardonnays, reflecting the ideal combination of soils, climate and mature vines.

Viticulture

As always, the Bannockburn Chardonnay is drawn mostly from the Estate’s Olive Tree Hill Vineyard (planted in 1976) and Winery Block (1981), which are on volcanic soils over limestone clays, and with an average vine age of around 35 years. More recently, the Estate Chardonnay also includes fruit from the Kelly Lane Vineyard (Clone 76).

Winemaking

Whole-bunch pressed and settled overnight, this wine was then wild-fermented in 500-litre French oak puncheons (20% new), with 70% undergoing malolactic. The wine then spent 10 months on lees with no stirring and no sulphur added until bottling.

Blend : Chardonnay (100%)

"True to style with a creamy flavour, but whipped into shape by lime juice and tight acidity. There’s a little spice, a sea spray and white flower freshness, white nectarine, firm and flinty texture, and a spiced biscuit-y finish of excellent length. Dry and glossy. Tense but generous. It’s a wine of contrasts and intensity. An excellent release here." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
