About The Wine

The Pinot Noir vines that form the base of this wine are some of the most important in the modern Yarra Valley.

The oldest vines were planted by Dr. Bailey Carrodous in 1969 and are some of the earliest planted in the Yarra Valley of the modern era. Given the Yarra Valley's towering reputation for Pinot Noir these days, the importance of this site can't be overstated.

It's a bolder, more concentrated version of Yarra Valley Pinot Noir than many on the market today. The structure and awe-inspiring depth of fruit make it a perfect option for the cellar.

The 2018 vintage is a top release of this iconic and highly-collectable wine.

About Yarra Yering

Yarra Yering is one of the most iconic wineries of the modern Yarra Valley.

Founded in 1969 by the visionary vigneron Dr. Bailey Carrodous, Yarra Yering has become a benchmark in quality and one of the most collected wineries in the country.

From this small patch of earth in the North of the Gruyere sub-region, Dr. Carrodous produced these legendary wines for more than three decades. In the process becoming recognised as one of the most influential winemakers in the Yarra's history.

Today, the wines are crafted by the talented Sarah Crowe. She brings the wines to bottle with the same passion and attention to detail that made the great Yarra Yering wines of old so revered.

Additional Info

From the Producer

Vines: Fruit for this wine was sourced from the Yarra Yering planting of Pinot Noir, containing some of the oldest vines of their type in the Yarra Valley. A mixed planting of 4 clones was undertaken in 1969, then followed up with replication in 1981 (top of the slope) & 1984 (bottom of the slope).

Cellaring: Pinot noir is such an enjoyable young wine, if you can keep yourself away for up to 10 years under suitable cellaring conditions you will be rewarded.

Vintage 2018: A cool and wet spring and summer delayed budburst and encouraged good canopy growth and good fruit set before summer arrived and thereafter the season turned dry. Picking over a busy 6 weeks delivering grapes with generous flavour development.

Winemaking: The grapes were hand-picked and chilled overnight. Processing the following day along a fruit sorting table and destemmed gently into our signature “tea-chest” small fermenters. Some whole bunches were added to contribute subtle stalk structure and a generous fruit profile. Working of the ferment by gentle hand plunging twice daily contributes to the soft fruit palate along with gentle pressing. Maturation for 10 months in all French barrels with 30% new and the balance older oak.

Aroma & Bouquet: Violet perfumed nose, mixed cherry fruits with a pinch of aniseed spice.

Palate: Red cherry fruits explode on the front palate. A silky elegance combined with very fine tannin structure, both grape and oak tannin to produce a medium-bodied yet powerful style, the 2018 delivering a juicy fruit palate; immediately delicious.

Halliday Wine Companion

"Sarah Crowe continues to find new features to the Yarra Yering wines. This is a subtle expression, with no thumping of drums, but is intensely pleasing. The bouquet fills all the senses with red fruits to the fore, the palate seamlessly taking on the theme. The length and balance mean this wine will seem ageless as the years go by. All this from a year in which many Yarra Valley pinot makers had to work hard." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

"In short it’s a class act. Everything is in sharp focus and yet it feels silky. It tastes of earth, undergrowth, red/black cherries and twiggy/sweet spice notes, though there’s a a garden aspect here too, like green succulent leaves, evident in its perfume. I can’t remember what I had for dinner; all I can remember is the wine. It’s captivating. It has serious length too." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
