About The Wine

The Yarra Yering Dry White No. 1 is one of the country's most elite examples of Semillon blend inspired by the whites of Bordeaux.

It is constructed specifically to be a cellaring style of wine; tight and racy in its youth and luscious at maturity. The fruit for this vintage of the blend was harvested entirely from the 25-year-old plantings of Semillon and Chardonnay on the Underhill Vineyard.

It was fermented in barrel and went through full malolactic fermentation. It's a wine that will show its best in time and will reward the patient.

An exemplary wine full of complexity and interest and one of the benchmarks for Semillon blends in the country.

About Yarra Yering

Yarra Yering is one of the most iconic wineries of the modern Yarra Valley.

Founded in 1969 by the visionary vigneron Dr. Bailey Carrodous, Yarra Yering has become a benchmark in quality and one of the most collected wineries in the country.

From this small patch of earth in the North of the Gruyere sub-region, Dr. Carrodous produced these legendary wines for more than three decades. In the process becoming recognised as one of the most influential winemakers in the Yarra's history.

Today, the wines are crafted by the talented Sarah Crowe. She brings the wines to bottle with the same passion and attention to detail that made the great Yarra Yering wines of old so revered.

Additional Info

From the Producer

Vines: Fruit for this wine was sourced from adry grown block south of Underhill Vineyard, slightly higher in elevation. A Bordeaux inspired white blend of 70% Semillon and 30% Chardonnay.

Cellaring: Has sufficient generosity & texture to be approachable as a young wine but will reward careful cellaring for up to 10 years.

Vintage 2018: A cool and wet spring and summer delayed budburst and encouraged good canopy growth and good fruit set before summer arrived and thereafter the season turned dry. Picking over a busy 6 weeks delivering grapes with generous flavour development.

Winemaking: Hand harvested, the Semillon was crushed before pressing for some skin contact to extract flavor from the skins, the Chardonnay whole bunch pressed before juice transferred for fermentation in old oak barrels lending weight and texture.

Aroma & Bouquet: Fresh green apple and a waxy preserved lemon peel with fresh box hedge lift.

Palate: Crunchy green apple freshness and lemon citrus poise from the Semillon grapes, minimal skin contact lending ginger spice, some of the weight from maturation in old, neutral oak barrels as well as the Chardonnay fruit. The bright acidity driving the palate length.

Blend : Semillon (70%), Chardonnay (30%)
ABV : 12%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2028

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Love this wine. Love the previous releases, love this one too. It has character, flesh and length. There’s bite to it, there’s a floral softness, there are lactose and saline characters, there’s chalk and peach. So much going on and yet it’s in a hurry to get to the finish." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"Semillon chardonnay. Crisp and lively, not far short of lemon sherbet with a twist of alcohol. Two things are certain: it will continue to develop on the left field, but the changes will stretch far down the track to the point of calling time. Interesting wine." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)
