About The Wine

Introducing Yarra Yering Dry Red No.3 - one of the Yarra's most unique wines, and one of its most delicious!

This is a field blend of 1990-planted Portugese varieties touriga nacional, tinta cao, tinta roriz, tinta amarela, avarelhao and sousao - the last varieties to be picked from the vineyard each year.  It's made with gentle hands (and feet!) and only old oak, with the aim being to retain all the spice and bright fruit that this style can deliver.

A delicious, fascinating wine with, as Campbell Mattinson put it, "character in spades".  A must try for any Yarra Yering fan!

About Yarra Yering

Yarra Yering is one of the most iconic wineries of the modern Yarra Valley.

Founded in 1969 by the visionary vigneron Dr. Bailey Carrodous, Yarra Yering has become a benchmark in quality and one of the most collected wineries in the country.

From this small patch of earth in the North of the Gruyere sub-region, Dr. Carrodous produced these legendary wines for more than three decades. In the process becoming recognised as one of the most influential winemakers in the Yarra's history.

Today, the wines are crafted by the talented Sarah Crowe. She brings the wines to bottle with the same passion and attention to detail that made the great Yarra Yering wines of old so revered.

From the Producer

Vines: Fruit was sourced from 1990 New Territories planting of classic Portuguese grape varieties on a rocky terraced hillside.

Cellaring: Drinking beautifully at present and will continue to evolve for up to 8 years under suitable cellaring conditions.

Vintage 2018: A cool and wet spring and summer delayed budburst and encouraged good canopy growth and good fruit set before summer arrived and thereafter the season turned dry. Picking over a busy 6 weeks delivering grapes with generous flavour development.

Winemaking: The last fruit to be harvested from the vineyard. Hand picked and destemmed together in a ‘field blend’ style retaining as many whole berries as possible. The first working of the must is with the feet as in a traditional lagar in Portugal to extract tannins from both skins and seeds. Gentle pressing and maturation in old oak barrels for 10 months.

Aroma: Fragrant lavender with mulberries and cardamom spices, some nettle and charcuterie complexity.

Palate: Leading with the powerful fruit and licorice spice of Touriga Naçional, the Tinta Cãobrings bright and fragrant blue fruit energy. Tinta Roriz brings a savoury depth to the palate to compliment the Tinta Amarela’s floral and bay leaf herbal lift. To tie everything together the finesse of Alvarelhão and the acidity of the Sousão tightens and drives the long palate.

Blend : Touriga Naçional (28%), Tinta Cão (28%), Tinta Amarela (17%), Tinta Roriz (11%), Alvarelhão (11%) and Sousão (5%)
ABV : 13%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2028
Bottle Size : 750ml

Halliday Wine Companion

"Made from '90 plantings of touriga nacional, tinta cao, tinta roriz, tinta amarela, avarelhao and sousao. Excellent winemaking, the varieties embracing each other on the medium-bodied palate. The texture of the purple and black fruits is perfect." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

The Wine Front

"Character in spades. Savoury as much as fruity. It has a sheen, a veneer, a character like Chinotto, a rumble of herbs. It’s a frisky light-ish red but then there’s that pencil-like texture and the overall breadth. It remains squeaky clean even as it lays the full array on. Much enarmoured." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)
