Description

Yangarra Estate are absolutely one of our very favourite producers and a winery that is making serious waves in the Australian wine industry.

Being a hero for the McLaren Vale region, both Shiraz and Grenache are their specialties. Peter Fraser loves working with the old Shiraz vines on the estate and has perfected his style here over the last few years. This is now consistently one of the most bankable Shiraz in the Vale.

It has become a beacon of value for those looking for a wine of serious quality that won't bust the bank account.

If you love Shiraz, if you love McLaren Vale, if you love wine at all, you should buy this. It will delight now or in a decade's time.

The 2018 growing season was a text book growing season, a very mild spring, a generally dry summer. With moderate yields, we harvested relatively early on the 10th of March (a fruit day in the biodynamic calendar). The 2018 wines produced typically darker and more intense wines.

VINEYARD INFORMATION: Shiraz adopts a very different form at Yangarra than the typical McLaren Vale style, and is more akin to the cooler climate styles. Our single vineyard estate has twelve individual blocks of Shiraz. Each block is defined by different aspects and subtle variations of the sand and Ironstone soils that overlie the ancient North Maslin Sands geological formation.

WINEMAKING INFORMATION: Approximately 10% whole bunches were used with 50% of the fruit remaining as whole berries. Mechanically sorted before going into open-top fermenters. Cold soaked until the onset of wild-fermentation, utilising the yeasts that naturally come in with the grapes from the vineyard. A careful regime of plunging and rack and returns. The resulting wine was kept on lees in 25% new French oak, 75% older French oak for 12 months. No fining, just filtration.

96 Points - "From six estate blocks, 50% on sand, 50% ironstone. Destemmed and mechanically sorted whole berries and 20% whole bunches open-fermented with a splash of viognier, 10 months in French oak (20% new). Dark fruits with earth, chocolate and licorice nuances. Sensational price." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

93 Points - "Sourced from six blocks across the Yangarra Estate. Roughly 50% on sand, the other half on ironstone. Its temper is even, its flavour is substantial. This wine is as balanced as they come. Tar and blackberry, a touch of sweet plum, plenty of peppercorn and dashes of cedar. Tannin drains back through the wine in an even flow. It's in overall excellent shape and is, as so often, very good buying." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Yangarra

Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!

They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. In the reds, their Grenache is as good as any in the land and is truly world class, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block.

A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and one of the country's modern day icon producers.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
