Description

This top value red is just the latest step on winemaker Peter Fraser's march towards recreating his own McLaren Vale examples of the famous bends of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Here old vine Grenache combines with Mourvèdre, Shiraz, Cinsaut, Carignan, and a splash of Counoise into a lighter styled playful red that has more under the hood than meets the eye.

In this blend you see the perfect mix of seriousness and playfulness - it's light and crunchy on one hand, it's precise and impeccably well built on the other.

For the dollars, it's one of the most interesting and satisfying reds in the region at the moment and a super-versatile red for any occasion.

There are 100 hectares of vineyards at Yangarra in 35 individual blocks. These vineyards are spread amongst an extra 70 hectares of creeks, native vegetation and native corridors. Each block is defined by different aspects and subtle variations of the sand and Ironstone soils that overlie the ancient North Maslin Sands geological formation. Our Noir is a careful blending of Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Cinsaut, Carignan and Counoise in which the composition varies from year to year, conveying the traditional estate blends of the southern Rhône. The backbone of the wine comes from our old bush vine Grenache planted in 1946.

WINEMAKING: Cold soaked 5-6 days, wild yeast fermented, 12 months maturation in older French oak on yeast lees, no fining just filtration.

94 Points - "Fruit is hand picked and mechanically sorted, with 50% whole berries in the mix, the juice wild fermented before spending 10 months in old oak. That's a lot of care for a $25 red wine, and it shows in the finished product - the Noir is a perfectly pitched red. Only medium bodied, there's an absolute riot of raspberry fruit. Juicy, vibrant, utterly addictive red and blackberry fruit, in a soft, but not unsubstantial mode. It's plump. Generous. Softly spoken. Unadulterated. It's a joven style, but with more structure and much more intensity than your average light red. And so so pure. How can you not like this? Sure. it's not going to cellar for decades. Nor is it a profound wine (the top Yangarra Grenache and Shiraz are more in that boat). But such profound drinking pleasure. And isn't that wine is about?" - Anrew Graham (Oz Wine Review)

93 Points - "New wine to the Yangarra range. Blend of 40% Grenache, 21% Mourvèdre, 14% Shiraz, 12% Cinsaut, 11% Carignan, 2% Counoise. They're about to plant picpoul noir and muscardin for use in future releases; Yangarra never does anything by half measures. It's a great wine to drink. Spicy, herbal, fragrant, a bit different, plenty of character, the fruit to carry it. Sparks fly. I guess you'd call it red fruited and medium bodied but that's just the start of things. You have to seek this out. It's got something." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

95 Points - "It's impossible to bypass the southern Rhone Valley in writing about this wine with its blend of grenache, mourvedre, shiraz, cinsaut, carignan and counoise. Autosuggestion of course, but its ultra-fragrant bouquet crosses into that of the garrigue, the juicy palate bubbling with similar flavours. Such value." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

Yangarra

Yangarra Estate is one of a small group of powerhouse wineries to raise its head from the sandy soils of Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Their wines are made entirely from an amazing old bush vine single vineyard, with the 2016 Halliday Winemaker of the Year, Peter Fraser, pulling the reins as winemaker. They are a certified biodynamic wine producer, and have even been named International Winery of the Year, twice!

They specialise in varieties found in the Rhone Valley. In the reds, their Grenache is as good as any in the land and is truly world class, with Shiraz and Mourvedre not far behind. The same applies to whites, the Roussanne expressions from Fraser’s experimentation with ceramic eggs are some of the most interesting in the country. In time, each of the 13 Rhone varieties will be grown on the Yangarra block.

A premium benchmark for the Blewitt Springs sub-region, and one of the country's modern day icon producers.

Ordering

We want Different Drop customers to always be getting the best price. If you see a lower price elsewhere, just get in touch and we will sort it out for you. We handle all our price-matching on a case by case basis.

Some things to keep in mind:

  • Retrospective price-matching is available for 30 days after you have purchased from us.
  • The price match cannot be used in conjunction with a coupon or one-off deal we are offering. The idea is for you to get the best price in the market so if that is already achieved through a coupon then we won't price match on top of that.
  • We don't price match clearance or fire sales.
  • We’ll match the listed price as long as it is a legitimate offer and the competing store is actually able to fulfil the order (they have stock or more stock is en route). Essentially we won't price match cheeky vendors listing wines they have no hope of actually getting for you...
  • It must be a publicly listed price. We won't match a price that has been achieved through a coupon/cash-back arrangement, or through a non-advertised offer over the phone or otherwise.
  • It is limited to a reasonable retail quantity.

We'll treat each price match request on its merit and reserve the right to refuse where we deem fit. For example, particularly rare wines, from non-trust-worthy vendors, in circumstances we deem illegitimate or if we feel our policy is being unfairly taken advantage of.

At the end of the day, we'll look after you and use common sense to ensure you're getting the best price, please just don't take the p%$$!

No, feel free to mix it up! There is no minimum requirement. You can order wines in any quantity or combination, 1 or 50+ bottles.

We stock three different sized gift boxes (single, three bottle and six), all are available for purchase for a flat rate of $8. They look great and make an awesome impression.

To add a gift box to your order, simply add at checkout. The special requests box is your friend, please give us as many details of what you are looking for and we will try our best, or get in contact to discuss it with you.

If you want to bulk order gifts or if you have any trouble please email hello@differentdrop.com or call and we can try and help.

If you can't add more wine to your cart it means we are low on stock of that wine. For example, if you are only able to 3 bottles and no more that means we only have 3 bottles left of that wine. If it's a must have, please contact us and we may be able to order more in for you.
