About The Wine

The Amelia Cabernet Merlot blend is one of the most bankable Cabernets in Victoria.

Produced by the Egan family from their home vineyard in the outskirts of Melbourne, a large portion of this wine comes from their oldest plantings going back to 1963.

The blend is comprised of roughly two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, one-third made up between Merlot & Cabernet Franc and a splash of Petit Verdot.

It's a gorgeous example of a medium-bodied BDX blend. It's a perfect cellaring option with the fruit concentration, balance and structure to evolve for decades in the bottle.

About Wantirna Estate

Wantirna Estate is a family affair founded in 1963 by Reg and Bertina Egan.

This bucolic old-world-inspired vineyard is located not far from Melbourne town centre - it is now surrounded by suburbia - the proverbial rose amongst the thorns.

Now run primarily by Reg and Bertina's daughter Maryann, the estate produces a small premium range of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and classic medium-bodied Bordeaux blends that are elegant, classic and exceptional options for the cellar.

Additional Info

From The Producer

A large proportion of the grapes for this wine come from the original 1963 plantings of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc vines. The remainder is from the more recently planted – 1989 – petit verdot. Whilst the proportions are different every year, depending on fruit set and cropping levels, roughly speaking the break down is about as follows: 65% cabernet sauvignon, 30% cabernet franc and merlot, and 5% petit verdot. The addition of the petit verdot grapes in the 1990s gave the wine an added backbone of tannin and natural acidity. With its long growing season, the petit verdot grapes are the last to be harvested, usually in mid April.

The vines for the Amelia are all dry farmed – that is, there is no irrigation. The roots go deep into the clay soil, searching out any available moisture. This and the age of the vines is crucial to making the intense yet elegant wine.

The wine is approachable young but will age for more than fifteen years.

"This is a beauty. In that, it’s a wine of beauty, in the glass, on the table. It’s sure, it’s composed, it’s cohesive and most of all, it’s convincing. It’s a final word of a wine. It tastes of currants and bay leaves, choc and sweet herbs but rattling off flavours is beside the point. This is a wine with a good heart, a good finish and a good story to tell, all of which come draped over a structure of classic design." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). PLEASE NOTE that we are currently seeing significant delays in the Australia Post delivery network. Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities. Orders are still arriving safe and sound but you may notice slower delivery times and less frequent scanning updates than usual.
