About The Wine

The Vat 47 Chardonnay is the flagship Chardonnay produced by the famous Tyrrell family in the Hunter Valley.

A blend of the best old vine fruit available to the Tyrrell's winemakers, this is a powerful wine that exemplifies the rich, full-bodied style of Chardonnay that the Hunter Valley has become famous for.

This was Australia's first commercially available Chardonnay, first released in 1971. It's a wine with a reputation for uncompromising quality and has set the pace for premium Hunter Chardonnay from day dot.

A powerful, cellar-worthy wine with the softness and richness to stand toe to toe with any of Australia's top Chardonnays.

About Tyrrell's

Tyrrell's is one of Australia's oldest and most prestigious family-owned wineries.

With a rich, decorated history stretching back to 1858, the Tyrrell family are custodians of some of the finest (and oldest) vineyards in the Hunter Valley, and indeed, the world.

Their top releases of Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay are highly collectable and considered by many as some of the truest regional examples of these varieties.

As the talented Chris Tyrrell takes his place in the cellar, just as four generations of Tyrrell men have before him, this family institution is set to remain one of the most important bastions of quality Australian wine for many years to come.

From The Producer

A continued evolution in style towards a more delicate and textural Chardonnay. The nose shows delicate citrus and white stonefruit with a hint of oak and sulphide lift. The palate has the generosity of Chardonnay in a toned down form. The fruit is balanced well with the fresh acidity and slight textural element from extended time on yeast lees

Blend : Chardonnay (100%)

Critic Reviews

94Points
The Wine Front

"It’s a little riper and juicier this year, with fresh cut peach, almond, a wisp of struck match, and judicious spicy oak. Medium-bodied, clean and fruity, with a flinty texture, settled acidity, and tidy length of flavour, ripe lime and vanilla in the mix (as ever), pulling a little toasty and savoury in the aftertaste. It hasn’t really come together as yet, of course, but the potential here is very good." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"From the Short Flat Vineyard that produced the grapes for the first Vat 47 in '71. The barrel fermentation protocols have long been set in stone, giving this wine a sense of variety, not of place. It often upstages cool climate chardonnays in wine shows." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine.
