2018 Trinity Hill Homage Syrah

Hawkes Bay, NZ

Perhaps NZ's greatest Syrah, only released in great years. Grace, elegance and cellaring potential all in abundance.

A wine that delivers its power with great subtlety...This is a very serious red indeed.

97 Points - Bob Campbell (The Real Review)

About The Wine

The best of the best. 99% Syrah with a hint of Viognier, this is one of NZ greatest red wines, and one of the most cellarworthy.

Founding Winemaker John Hancock worked with Gerard Jaboulet in the Rhone. After Gerard passed away too early in 1997 the Syrah planted in the Gimblett Gravels was destined for a tribute to Gerard, a Homage to a great man.

Now only released in good vintages, which thankfully have been numerous in recent years, it is a selection of Trinity Hills' best vineyard plots, aged in the best french oak.

It is polished and suave in style, perfumed and silky, with red berry and pepper flavours dominating. The length and purity are stunning.

About Trinity Hill

Trinity Hills has its genesis in the early 1990s as part of the pioneering vignerons who planted red varieties in the barren Gimblett Gravels area of Hawkes Bay. What foresight - this is now the home to the countries greatest Shiraz and Cabernet blends.

With an extreme focus on quality, under the guidance of renowned head winemaker Warren Gibson, Trinity Hill is at the very top echelon of NZ wine, and its Homage Syrah a regular contender for the country's best red wine.

From The Producer

The 2018 Homage displays the purity, sophistication and refinement that are the hallmarks of the marque.

A captivating perfume – fresh raspberries/blackberries, sweet spices, black liquorice, crushed minerals, cedar – leads to an exquisite, intricately detailed palate with superb definition and depth of flavour. Ultra-fine tannins and vibrant acidity provide a refined texture and an exceptionally long finish.

A wine of beauty, poise and finesse that will blossom and reveal more complexity with time. Drink from 2022 to 2037. Decant before serving.

Critic Reviews

The Real Review

"Dense yet elegant syrah with floral, violet, dark berry, black pepper, anise and spicy oak. A wine that delivers its power with great subtlety. Surprisingly accessible but with obvious cellaring potential. This is a very serious red indeed." - Bob Campbell (The Real Review)

Jancis Robinson

"Tasted blind. Lovely combination of meat, violet and stemmy complexity on the nose. Gets the fruit power of Syrah just right too: brambles and plums. Charred meat on the finish. Fine, chalky tannin. A great example, where canny winemaking has added extra complexity without compromising the integrity of the fruit. A classic. 18/ 20." - Richard Hemming (
