So fragrant, so lovely in its exotic spice... Palate and bouquet is in synch... A beautiful, fine boned, lighter and precise wine.

About The Wine

This wine is an homage to the wines made by the past legends of the Hunter Valley.

A student of the history of the region, Andrew Thomas has crafted this wine in the classic "Hunter River Burgundy" style. Where traditionally these wines were predominantly Shiraz with a small portion of Pinot Noir thrown in for added complexity and aromatic highlights, Thommo has made this with a touch of Semillon verjuice to give a crisp edge to the palate - a natural acidification and a tip of the cap to the red wines of an era gone by.

The effect is just brilliant. A modern spin on a classic style.

From The Producer

Inspired by previous winemaking legends such as Maurice O’Shea and Murray Tyrrell, this is a modern spin on traditional Hunter Valley Shiraz. The name “DJV” refers to the feeling of déja vu that you may well experience when tasting this wine. Made using a variety of traditional techniques, this Shiraz is intentionally a lighter, “Hunter River Burgundy” style.

Sourced from the alluvial flats of Hermitage Rd, the Trevena vineyard (planted 1966) produces the 'lightness' we are looking for in this style. The acidity profile was balanced by co-fermenting the Shiraz with a small portion (4%) of green Semillon ‘verjus’. Pressed off a little earlier this year due to the 2018 Hunter Valley vintage producing more a 'robust' style of Shiraz in general. This was followed by 10 months maturation exclusively in older (5-6 years old) barriques prior to bottling in January 2019.

Blend : Shiraz (96%), Semillon ‘verjus’ (4%)
ABV : 13.70%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2026
Bottle Size : 750ml

"From the Trevena vineyard on Hermitage Road. No new oak. I’ll also say that MB was doing a lot of typing, so I was happy to take a lazy back seat, and let him do the heavy lifting. Light, frisky, just medium-bodied, very purple, good crunch, very bright, dusting of fine sandy tannin, liquorice, perfume, juicy raspberry on a long finish. Lovely. My favourite wine in the range, easily." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

"So fragrant, so lovely in its exotic spice, pot pourri, savoury notes and cherry, dried and fresh, fruit character. Palate and bouquet is in synch. Glossy texture, succulent tannins, shapely and a clear bell ring of fresh, savoury and minerally things. Tannin is very fine and so very pleasing. A beautiful, fine boned, lighter and precise wine. Very good." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"An homage to the great wines of the Hunter yesteryear, many of which were a savvy meld of shiraz and pinot. Think Maurice O'Shea and his prodigiously long-lived wines from the 60's. Here, pulpy black fruits, anise, clove and black olive bounce around a mid-weighted palate. Juicy. Succulent. Floral. The here and now." - Ned Goodwin (Halliday Wine Companion)

DDS review

"Bright cherry red in colour, the wine is light on its feet with 'pretty' and perfumed red berried fruits, some dried herb complexity and superb carry of vibrant silky textured fruit character. A wine of seamless elegance and class that drinks magnificently now, and will reward careful cellaring. Quite intentionally in the lighter end of the medium bodied spectrum, but definitely punches well above its weight." - Thomas Wines
