About The Wine

This is the wine closest to Jason Schwarz' heart.  It comes from a vineyard planted by his parents over 50 years ago, and it produced the fruit from which Jason made his first ever wine some 20 years ago.

Still picked by hand, this remarkable Barossa Valley vineyard yields fruit if great power, complexity and balance.  Schwarz is very much a modern Barossa winemaker though, so along with great power and plushness comes elegance, aroma and a savoury side.

A glorious Barossa Shiraz and a must-try for any fan of Schwarz Wine Co.

From the Producer

The Nitschke Road Shiraz block was planted by my mother and father in 1968 in Bethany near the base of the Eastern Barossa Range. The vineyard is still pruned and picked by hand and the soils of loam over brown and red clays results in a wine of considerable concentration and drive.

Rich, opulent fruit is the reoccurring theme with this vineyard and it always seems to show great balance and texture year in, year out.

The Nitschke Block Shiraz was the first wine made by Jason Schwarz back in 2001.

Winemaking:

First portion picked 5th March 2018, 25% whole bunch, open fermenter on skins for 27 days. Basket pressed filled to 40% new French Puncheon and older French HH’s.

Second portion picked 8th March 2018, 30% whole bunch, open fermenter on skins 26 days. Basket pressed filled into new French HH’s 25% and the remainder used French HH and Puncheons.

Third portion picked 16th March 2018, 30% whole bunch, open fermenter on skins 30 days. Basket pressed filled into new French HH and Puncheon 20% and the remainder used French HH and Puncheon.

All parcels were picked according to required flavours they received gentle pump overs and hand plunging. Foot stomping of the whole bunches occurs towards the end of ferment.

Halliday Wine Companion

"All the good stuff: dry-grown and fermented under the aegis of wild yeast; a smattering of whole-bunch seasoning (25%), French oak (20% new), conferring poise, freshness and authority. As far as Barossa shiraz goes, this is benchmark. Plush but nicely taut. A stream of boysenberry fruit and violet scents sashay to a samba of thyme, tapenade and smoked meats, nicely avoiding any sense of reduction, or clunky jam. This is smart. Very." - Ned Goodwin (Halliday Wine Companion)

"Black cherry, pepper and bacon bits, dried herbs and flowers, and vanilla. It’s spicy, nutty and meaty, black fruit and tar, but quite lively and firm too. Savoury over fruit sweet, though it does have a fair volume of blood plum and black fruit. Finish is spicy and wheaty, some sour cherry. Individual style. Nicely done." - 93 points (The Wine Front)
