About The Wine

Entire volumes have been written on Steve Pannell's influence on the Australian Wine industry. His remarkable trophy room is a testament to his place in the industry.

Much of his success of the last couple of decades stems from his deep love of his home region, McLaren Vale. 'The Vale' is Steve's ode to his home. As the man says, "it is the Vale in essence, taste and character."

With old vine fruit, carefully measured amounts of oak, and co-fermentation of the two varieties this is concentrated, energetic and perfectly balanced all at once.

About S.C. Pannell

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate.  They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!

He is truly one of the most forward thinking and inspirational Australian winemakers alive today.

From The Producer

Smells like McLaren, Vale; earth, woody herbs, iodine, dark red fruit, chocolate and dark spice. The palate starts with blackberry, and liquorice and finishes with sun-kissed red brick and an umami character that lengthens the experience.

These two varieties unite to achieve a seamless medium-bodied wine with a structured texture. The Grenache controls the mid-palate exuberance of the Shiraz and provides great length. The 2018 has more generous fruit than recent vintages providing immediate appeal, however the consistent mid-palate intensity makes for a very serious bottle of wine.;

Blend : Shiraz (51%), Grenache (49%)
ABV : 14.5
Closure : Screw Cap

The Wine Front

"A 51% Shiraz (Koomilya) and 49% Grenache from 45 year old bush vines grown in the region once commonly known as Seaview. Puncheons and 2800L French oak vats.Dark berries and raspberry, saline with some orange and dried floral notes. Plenty of nourishing tannin here built into a chocolate and ferrous flavour base. Nutty too, with a dried seaweed character on a long firm finish. Beautifully made, and appropriately named." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Top 100 Australian Wines of 2022 - "This is a structured and seriously complex red with black cherry, cloves and black pepper aromas and flavors. Crushed stone, bark and spice. Some porcini mushroom, too. Medium to full body. Sea salt, clove and white pepper. Chewy but polished. Drinkable but better in three or four years. Screw cap." - James Suckling
