2018 Ravensworth Zin-Zin Baby

Young, NSW

Small batch release release of Zinfandel from Ravensworth! Perfect for the Christmas turkey!

About The Wine

Never one to shy away from trying new things, here the singular Bryan Martin tries his hand at Zinfandel from 20ish-year-old vines in the Hilltops.

With a little advise from some Californian winemakers on how to handle this variety, Bryan turned out a lovely wine for the very first release. The second is every bit as good.

It's bright and jubey, floral and juicy. And according to Bryan, it's a top-notch match for Turkey and cranberry sauce.

Stocks are limited so get in quick if you want to try the latest Ravensworth creation!

About Ravensworth

Bryan Martin is a winemaker at the height of his powers. Setting aside the exceptional work he is doing behind the scenes at regional flagbearer, Clonakilla, his Ravensworth wines have become some of the Canberra region’s hottest releases.

Bryan’s winemaking style is equal parts science and artistic flair. He’s an adventurous spirit trapped in the body of a technical virtuoso. A concert pianist jamming to free jazz. It’s a killer combination.

His range is full of alternative varieties and whacky blends, with texture and balance the key in everything. Truly unique wines from a region on the up and up and some of Canberra’s most sort after wines.

DDS review

Sweet violet lift, filled with blueberries and pepper, medium bodied and juicy as through the palate and oh so fresh! It tightens but it's slippery too and super spicy. Can see the cranberry jubiness that Bryan talks about. Sweet, spice and tasty. Yum. - Different Drop Wine Team

The Wine Front

"Has the richness, oiliness, dense sweet plummy characters and anise detail expected from zinfandel but there’s way more going on here, Chinese five spice, ground granite notes, faint nuttiness and a lifted floral note that elevates any heft in the wine. It’s plush but lively to taste, stains the palate nicely and finds some light, chalky tannins to close and joins the fresh, almost blood orange acidity that freshens the finish. What a lovely expression." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

From The Producer

One day, late January 2017, driving through some vineyards near Young in NSW, a pretty fruit and grain growing town that is well know for its rich, fruit-laced Shiraz and competitive interpretive dance ensembles, we noted on a strainer post at the end of the old looking vineyard the code - ZIN, 1995 - Turns out this is zinfandel planted, you guess it, in the grungy mid-90's. Wow I thought, who would have planted this obscure variety that at least three countries claim as their own. Zinfandel is the Californian term for this very adaptable variety. Then there's Primitivo from the heal of Italy, where it makes rich, dark, quite alcoholic sun-drenched reds. Luckily, its Croatian name didn't stick, mainly because no one can actually pronounce it: Crljenak Kaštelanski

So this vineyard got my attention, the fruit looked marvelous so we nabbed some and, after a quick group chat with some tanned Californian winemakers, we settled for a gentle approach, some bunches, a little plunging, a brief soak and just half a year in barrel and here we have it, our first Crlje...CrljenaKašte....elanski, something like that.

Surprisingly, this goes particularly well with roast turkey and cranberries, so yeh, maybe this variety found its nirvana in the States like Krist Novoselic did.
