2018 Ravensworth Hilltops Barbera

Hilltops, NSW

Fundamentally delicious Barbera made in tiny amounts by Ravensworth winemaker extraordinaire, Bryan Martin.

It’s a pitch perfect example of ‘barbera’.

About The Wine

Bryan Martin's Hilltops Barbera is a picture perfect example of an Aussie take on this Italian stalwart variety..

The Italian variety finds a happy groove amongst the Ravensworth range. The easy approachability as a fresh young wine, the lack of need for additions, the balance of fruit and savoury characters that Italian varieties offer all suits Bryan's winemaking down to a tee.

Perfectly ripe, delicious red fruit and a lovely lick of chewy tannin make this one of the most versatile wines we've seen in a while. Anytime, anywhere. If you're looking for something to take to your next dinner party, this would be a great choice.

About Ravensworth

Bryan Martin is a winemaker at the height of his powers. Setting aside the exceptional work he is doing behind the scenes at regional flagbearer, Clonakilla, his Ravensworth wines have become some of the Canberra region’s hottest releases.

Bryan’s winemaking style is equal parts science and artistic flair. He’s an adventurous spirit trapped in the body of a technical virtuoso. A concert pianist jamming to free jazz. It’s a killer combination.

His range is full of alternative varieties and whacky blends, with texture and balance the key in everything. Truly unique wines from a region on the up and up and some of Canberra’s most sort after wines.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"Shows all of the good sides of Barbera. Soft red cherry and sweet berried fruit, finely knit, succulent tannin, a twinge of green and brown herb and bright acidity. So young and yet so moreish in style. Great drinking. Get the pasta - stat!" - Different Drop Wine Team

The Wine Front

"I always like to say that Australia should do its own thing with notable Italian varieties, but here’s one that could switch out for anything great and Italian. Kudos, Brianno Martino. Sour cherry writ large, anise, wild mint, fennel, garrigue. All happening here. Tart and tangy acidity the major player to cherry juice and cranberry freshness. A lot of hustle in the palate, light tannins, insane freshness, great drinkability. It’s a pitch perfect example of ‘barbera’. Find pizza, chill bottle a little, drink from water glasses." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Additional Info

From The Producer

I wouldn't go so far as to say this is particularly weird any more, Barbera, as a variety, makes perfect sense, ticks all the right boxes:

- Barbera grows almost anywhere, plant it in concrete and it would still have a crack at producing fruit
- Chemically, it's an easy wine to make as it has a great acid balance
- Doesn't require any bells and whistles like new oak, bunches or time is the cellar to work itself out
- Leans toward more savoury characters rather than being a fruit bomb
- It's an Italian word that is easy to say, unlike chiacchiericcio, which funnily enough means idle chitchat
