About The Wine

The Old Vine Grenache is the cornerstone of the Purple Hands range.

The Purple Hands team shapes this wine in a modern style for the region where freshness and energy is prized above the richer inky styles of old.

It's all about red fruit, lively spices, medium weight and ease of drinking.

If you want to cellar it, you can, for sure, but this is made to be enjoyed from day one. It rates very highly amongst its peers in this price range. A very safe bet if Barossa Grenache is your thing.

About Purple Hands

Purple Hands are an excellent Barossa producer crafting tiny quantities of some very elegant and flavourful full bodied reds.

Holding the reigns are Mark Slade and Craig Stansborough - the latter of which is chief winemaker at well-known Barossa winery, Grant Burge. Craig's own vineyard supplies much of the Purple Hands fruit. A distinguished ancient vineyard planted around the end of the 1800s forms the basis of the Planta Circa label. And the After Five Wine Co. wines showcase other special sites from around the region that they believe have a rare quality of character.

These wines exemplify the classic regional characters of power and presence and will reward patience in the cellar for die-hards of the region.

From The Producer

The Grenache was hand-picked on the 4th and 6th March 2018. Around 25% whole clusters were tipped into open fermenters with the balance crushed on top, header boards were placed on day 2 of ferment. Ferment was the result of indigenous yeast. Temperatures were allowed to reach 30C with pump overs performed 2 times daily reducing to nil later in ferment. After 11 and 12 days on skins the fruit was basket pressed and transferred into older puncheons to undergo malo-lactic fermentation. Post malo the wine was then left 3 weeks before SO2 was added in place, the wine was left on lees and topped regularly. The wine was racked late January 2020 and underwent a coarse filtration prior to bottling.

"Raspberry, baking spices, dried herbs, aniseed. Medium bodied, raspberry and spice, firm graphite tannin, clean acidity, lithe yet powerful, finish is long, dry and firm in tannin. Serious business here. Impressive." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"Hand-picked fruit from old bush vines, 35% whole bunch, aged 9 months on lees in older puncheons. Lovely varietal perfume on the bouquet with spicy and savoury red fruit aromas as part of the equation. Barely medium-bodied, it's lithe and lively, the ripe but tangy flavours and gently persistent tannin carrying it along in buoyant fashion." - Steven Creber (Halliday Wine Companion)

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities. Orders are still arriving safe and sound but you may notice slower delivery times and less frequent scanning updates than usual.

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine.
