About The Wine

Napa Valley Cabernet and Cabernet Blends are some of the new world's most renowned wines, full of plush power and huge length.

Dave Phinney at Orin Swift, while always picking ripe and releasing richer wines, has with his Papillon blend also shown a more elegant style is possible. Ripe, sure, but not overbearing, it has a coolness to the blackcurrant fruit, and a precision to the peppery/ herbal characters.

The length of flavour is to be savoured, and while cellaring would be the preference it is very much approachable in its relative youth.

About Orin Swift

Orin Swift was founded in 1998, by renegade Dave Phinney, who left a budding career as lawyer to start his own wine label, named after his parents – combining his father’s middle name, Orin and mother’s maiden name, Swift.

He sources fruit from around the key viticultural regions of California, with a focus on Rhone and Bordeaux blends in reds and Chardonnay, of course, for whites. A Californian cult winemaker par excellence.

Hailed by Wine Spectator Magazine as 'one of the most influential and innovative winemakers in California’, his powerful, individual wines are matched by the individuality of this labels, each of which are works of art in themselves.

From The Producer

Papillon is our Cabernet-based blend that’s composed of all five Bordeaux varieties. The goal was to incorporate all the majesty of Cabernet Sauvignon with the subtleties of Cabernet Franc and Merlot and the power of Petit Verdot and Malbec.

Paying respect to the Bordeaux varietals that made the Napa Valley what it is today, Papillon is our take on the classic five-varietal blend. Rich, lush and decadent, we strive to make the wine bipolar—big and brawny but also nuanced and delicate. Much like the label, the wine presents numerous juxtapositions; at one moment the entry hits you in the face with ripe fruit while the mid-palate presents an elegant counter. Quality vineyards from across the Napa Valley, including fruit from the Atlas Peak and St. Helena AVAs, encompass the blend.

The Wine Advocate

"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Bordeaux Blend Papillon springs from the glass with plum preserves, baked blackcurrants and black mulberries with touches of menthol, tobacco leaf and pencil lead. Full-bodied, the palate has a firm texture of ripe, grainy tannins with a lively line and a long earthy finish." - Lisa Perotti-Brown (The Wine Advocate)
