About

About The Wine

One of Nick Spencer's most formative experiences in wine was the 2011 Len Evans Tutorial where he had the rare opportunity to sample some of the worlds most famous wines under exam conditions.

Amongst the flights of DRC and First Growth Bordeaux, Nick says the wines that moved him most were the great old Australian red wines of the 1960s and 1970s. These were blended wines, with a house style the primary focus rather than the emphasis on regional or varietal wines which is so prevalent in Australian wine today.

The Gundagai Red is Nick's attempt to bring that old blended philosophy into the modern day. It's a wine that shows ripe blue fruit characters, a vibrant nose of violets and spice and silky decadent tannins which should see it mature nicely over the medium-long term.

About Nick Spencer Wines

Nick Spencer made a name for himself after a hugely successful decade-long stint as chief winemaker at Eden Road, before deciding in 2017 to take the plunge and start his very own label.

The Nick Spencer wines are, like Eden Road's, focused on the regions of the NSW High Country, in particular, Tumbarumba and Gundagai.

With Nick's access to some of the region's best fruit, his wines are all about balance, style and drinkability, with Nick's stamp of quality on top. Tiny volumes made and an exciting producer to watch out for!

DDS review

Nice lift of blackberry, blueberry and violet with something like sweet licorice bullets. Slick and spiced though the mouth, has some nice backend Cabernet tannins. Slight bloody note and some iodine and raspberry. It's medium to full bodied, slinky smooth and damn easy to like. - Different Drop Wine Team

The Wine Front

"Ferrous, iron-filings character in with blue and black fruit, violet perfume, aniseed and chocolate. Medium-bodied, youthful juiciness of blue fruit, but inky and savoury, crisp almost cranberry juice feel to the acidity, tannin is nicely buried, sticky and fine grained, with a finish all boysenberry juice and dried roses. It’s tasty now, though I suspect something very interesting will roll out with considered cellaring." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
