This is a phenomenal pinot, offering immense freshness, red cherries and berries in abundance and a swathe of spicy, undergrowth complexity... Wow!

About The Wine

This is the top Pinot Noir in the Murdoch Hill range.

A single vineyard offering from Uraidla in SA, this was fermented as 50% whole bunches - young gun winemaker Michael Downer drawing more smoky/spicy complexity from the fruit with the higher whole-bunch inclusion on this wine.

Full of character and always highly rated by the critics, this is surely one of the finest Pinots in the Hills.

About Murdoch Hill

Murdoch Hill is a family-owned winery captained by talented young winemaker Michael Downer.

Downer splits the range in two: his clean-cut, consistently high-quality ‘Estate’ wines are excellent value and perpetually reliable, and his quirky, adventurous ‘Artisan’ wines which offer an alt-styling and different shades of the region.

With the combination of high-quality Adelaide Hills fruit grown on the family estate and the undoubted talent in the winery, this is a Hills producer on the up and up!

Viticulture

Michael Downer's blue-ribbon Pinot is a blend of fruit from two Piccadilly vineyards high up in the Hills. The first site lies outside the town of Piccadilly, below Mount Lofty, and provides Downer with a delicate and fine wine with pretty aromatics and pure, red fruit notes. The second vineyard, in Ashton, sits on a steep, east-facing slope on rather shallow sandstone and hard soils. Naturally yields are very low, providing fruit with structure and persistence. The altitude and aspect of both sites provides the elongated ripening conditions that Pinot Noir loves.

Winemaking

From harvest to blending, Downer handled each clone separately. Each batch retained a portion of whole berries and whole bunches (30%). Again, oak impact was kept minimal, with the wine raised in mostly French oak puncheons and barrique—approximately one quarter new—for roughly 9-10 months. Bottled without fining or filtration.

"This is a phenomenal pinot, offering immense freshness, red cherries and berries in abundance and a swathe of spicy, undergrowth complexity. The palate winds up and pitches a scintillating array of red cherries and strawberries long and straight, amid super fine and polished tannins. Lands right in the zone with an explosively flavorful finish. Wow!" - Nick Stock (Jamessuckling.com)

Halliday Wine Companion

"From two prized east-facing vineyards, hand-picked, 40% whole bunch, matured for 9 months in French oak (35% new). The fruit flavours are tight and clearly varietal, the wine with a healthy life ahead." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

92Points
The Wine Front

"Ultra fragrant, floral and herbal notes abound, whiffs of red cherry and pomegranate, a lighter perfume but nonetheless wildly appealing. Gloss and silky, texturally a fantastic swoosh of lightly done flavour with feathery tannins likewise in the mix. Delicacy and purity feel like two good words, though a lick of creamy-malt oak nurturing things through is evident. Slightly bitter and shrill finish takes a sheen off, but the gist is a very lovely, finely wrought pinot noir." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
