About The Wine

Lots of excitement about the new 2018 Moss Wood Cabernet, hailed by owner/ winemaker Keith Mugford as the best vintage ever of his icon wine.

It's an astonishingly elegant, ethereal wine that needed some time to show its charms. Classic blackcurrant, clove, tobacco and cedar notes dominate the nose but there is also a fresher, red-fruited character keeping everything pure and lifted.

The palate is full-bodied and grippy but in a linear, delicate sense. You will need to invent a time machine or give this a bit of a decanter slap to enjoy within the next five years.

A worthy landmark of Australian wine.

About Moss Wood

Started by the pioneering Bill and Sandra Pannell in 1969, Moss Wood is one of the legendary names in the Australian wine industry, helping establish Margaret River as a world-class wine region.

>Located in the northern sub–region of Wilyabrup, current owners Clare & Keith Mugford have been growing the winery's reputation and range since the mid 1980s. The Cabernet Sauvignon is one of Australia's greatest wines, the Chardonnay is exceptional, and the Ribbon Vale range represents excellent value for Margaret River.

From The Producer

We enthusiastically recommend this wine for cellaring. It has the concentration and complexity to age gracefully for decades. However, there will be a dilemma to wrestle with in the short term because the fruit generosity and balance are such that it is very drinkable now. Our best advice is for those who are keen to cellar it and enjoy older wine, it should be kept for at least 10 years and by which time it will be showing some of its complex bottle bouquet and the structure will be starting to soften. However, full maturity is unlikely to be reached before 25 years of age and it should last for several decades beyond that.

Old vines, dry-grown, low yielding vineyard.

Hand plunging in open fermenters 3-4 times per day.

Average 28 months ageing in 225 litre, French oak barrels, 25% new.

Blend : Cabernet Sauvignon (92%), Petit Verdot (4%), Cabernet Franc (4%)
Drink Until : 2035

"It’s fair to say, that Moss Wood Cabernet is a very distinctive style. It always tastes like Moss Wood, which is a good thing. MB had a look at this wine also, though I’ve spent a little more time with it just now seeing what happens with a decent amount of airtime (not sure if that’s one word, or two, but looks messy as two). Red and black berries, violets, dried mint, but also a fair amount of savoury stuff, such as leather, resin and toasty wood, almost a liquorice sort of richness too. Full-bodied, dense and chewy, fresh acidity, saline and seaweed characters, feels a bit gummy with it, and the finish is packed with dry tannin and beefy flavour, and is a little abrupt as a result. It will unfurl with bottle age, is my educated guess, but kind of growly and tense as at now." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

"As I suspected in anticipation, a great wine from a great vintage. This is a glorious statement from one of the great estates in Margaret River. Classical medium weight in that understated Moss Wood way. Perfectly integrated oak and fine, chalky tannins for support. Leafy cabernet notes on the nose with a touch of light bay leaf and brick dust. The minerally edge to the palate holds the line through to the very long finish. The length on the palate is extraordinary." - Ray Jordan (The West Australian)

"Can a cabernet be any finer, better structured and more engaging? This gloriously composed wine shows crème de cassis, spicy oak, subtle cigar, game and rich floral aromas on the nose, leading to an immensely concentrated palate offering exceptional depth and drive. Offering waves of refined texture and delicious flavours, classically structured by loads of fine tannins, finishing seductively long and gratifying. At its best: 2028 to 2058." - Sam Kim (Wine Orbit)
