About The Wine

If you've been keeping track of Australia's best alternative variety wines of the last few years, this should already be on your hit list.

The Mayford Tempranillo may well be Australia's most consistently excellent Tempranillo. Grown on a small vineyard in Porepunkah in the Alpine Valleys, Eleana Anderson and Bryan Nicholson are the couple responsible for this beautiful Australian benchmark for the variety.

It's the undeniable power and structure of the wine that truly sets it apart. Consistently one of the finest examples in the land, the 2018 looks to be one of Mayford's best to date. If you want to see how good Australian Tempranillo can be, this is the best place to start.

About Mayford

Mayford has been a work in progress since 1995, now they are one of the leading producers in the Alpine Valley. Setting the bar high, are Eleana Anderson and Bryan Nicholson. Very high indeed.

They only produce four wines from their bucolic estate; Chardonnay, Shiraz, one of the country’s best Tempranillo and a blend of Tempranillo and Cabernet which shows immense promise.

Bryan tends the vines, Eleana makes the wines. From the vine to the bottle, this couple do it all themselves. Small batches of wine with only quality in mind.

A jewel in the crown for the Alpine Valleys and Porepunkah region.

From The Producer

The 2018 vintage can only be described as sensational.

Solid winter and spring rainfall lead into a cool start to summer, followed by a prolonged warm and dry autumn. These conditions produced good fruit set, even veraison and enabled full tannin and flavour development- resulting in structural, balanced and complete wines that are amongst some of the finest that we have made at Mayford.

Multiple small parcels were hand-picked over the last week of February and the first week of March 2018. Each separate batch was chilled and cold soaked prior to natural ferment in open pots with extensive hand plunging. Some batches had a percentage of stalk and whole bunch inclusion and others, extended post ferment-maceration.

New clonal parcels play a role, vinified separately and bringing interest and points of difference. Each wine was then basket pressed before being put to barrel for maturation in French barriques (25% new) for eleven months, retaining malo lees for texture and complexity. An exhilarating blending process completed the journey.

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Mayford and Tempranillo have become synonymous. Savoury, sweet, structured and sustained. The way this wine evolves in the glass is quite something. We get sweet cedar and coffee, cola and sars, earth and cloves. We get a solid push of flavour but there’s such reach to the tannin too. Quality is top notch. It’s going to cellar well too." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

DDS review

"Complex and dark, the 2018 Tempranillo has massive ageing potential, and has to be one of, if not, the best, Tempranillo made at Mayford to date. Fragrance leaps from the glass. Spice, think cloves and cinnamon, coat the delicious black and red fruits, sarsaparilla, black cherry and raspberry, with a savoury afterthought of dried herb and earth. A layering of dark fruits show complete ripeness but also restraint. Firm and velvety mouth-coating tannins bring balance." - Eleanor Anderson, winemaker

Halliday Wine Companion

"Mayford's hidden valley just keeps turning out topflight tempranillo. This is as good as any release so far. It's savoury as much as sweet, juicy with flavour as much as it is structured and controlled. Ample flavour without going overboard and a sustained finish; give it a couple of years in bottle and then start tucking in." - Campbell Mattinson (Halliday Wine Companion)
