About The Wine

Luciano Sandrone farms an organic vineyard in Valmaggiore in Roero, just to the north of Barolo itself, and this is their source for a high-toned, exceptional Nebbiolo that would turn heads even it were bottled as Barolo.

It's a spectacular, amphitheatre vineyard, very densely planted, and with more limestone than the clay-heavy soils to the south.

Layered and powerful for sure, but with a line of limestone tension running through it, and a mineral, stoney feel to the finish. Best drunk in 5-10 years but lavishly enjoyable now.

About Luciano Sandrone

Luciano Sandrone is the founding father of this famous Barolo producer and he is still powers on, even though he is now into his 80s. The domaine, started effectively in his garage in 1970s, remains all in the family.

They are based in the commune and town of Barolo itself, in the shadow of the famous hillside vineyard Cannubi Boschis, source of their most renowned wines.

They now boast 27 hectares of vines in Barolo, Langhe and Roero. Organic viticulture is key, as is elongated skin contact for Nebbiolo and natural yeast fermentation.

As well as historically brilliant Barolo, they also produce extremely high-quality Dolcetto and Barbera which may change the way you perceive those varieties.

From The Producer

In the Roero zone, in the town of Vezza d'Alba, on the left bank of the river Tanaro, the concave Valmaggiore hill is one of the best historic examples of origin and quality. Already in the nineteenth century, the Nebbiolo grapes grown in this vineyard were so highly regarded that they dictated the price for the entire territory.

In the 1990s, the first sight of Valmaggiore was like a bolt of lightning for Luciano and Luca: they fell in love at first sight. This was not only for the history and the long viticultural tradition, but also for the particular uniqueness of those sandy soils combined with the microclimate.

"The Luciano Sandrone 2018 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore shows a very fruity, fresh and accessible side of the Nebbiolo grape. This wine is open-knit and inviting with a steady succession of aromas that range from red cherry and plum to rosemary sprig and crushed mineral. On some level, you could call it Barolo Lite, although that does not do justice to the Valmaggiore vineyard in Roero that outperforms year after year. The wine is Barolo-adjacent for sure, but it offers its own bright and distinct personality. It's an exciting, new generation of Nebbiolo.” - Monica Larner (The Wine Advocate)

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy).
