2018 Loosen Barry Wolta Wolta Riesling

Clare Valley, SA

Australian terroir meets German craftsmanship - this is one of the most exciting Australian Riesling releases in recent memory.

About The Wine

Two giants of the Riesling world collide here for this unique, utterly compelling Riesling.

The Wolta Wolta was made as a partnership between Erni Loosen and the Barry family of Jim Barry Wines. Five tonnes of premium fruit were identified from their notable Lodge Hill Vineyard. The grapes were left to hang on the vine for an additional week compared to the rest of the Riesling harvested by Jim Barry, allowing extra sugar and flavour development as the fruit ripened on the vine.

Once picked, it was sent to a huge 2800L German foudre to ferment and rest on lees, then transfered to stainless for an additional year before release.

The final wine is incredible. Yes, it is handsomely priced, but it's also one of the most outstanding and unique Rieslings ever produced in this country.

About Jim Barry Wines

Jim Barry Wines is a family affair in the Clare Valley.

Founded by one of SA's most influential wine figures, this producer has been one of the most acclaimed in the region since it began in 1974.

They focus primarily on traditional Clare Valley varieties, with a myriad of laser-sharp Rieslings, powerful Shiraz and intense Cabernet blends making up the foundations of the range. With a sprawling range including everything from super-premium to top value, they are considered a cornerstone of the Clare with classic wines that develop beautifully in the cellar given time.

Now, with the third generation of Barrys - Sam, Tom and Olivia - now in charge of the winemaking, marketing and business development, there is a new energy about the brand and there are plenty of exciting new things on the horizon.

From The Producer

On 3rd March 2018, five tonnes of Riesling were hand harvested and sorted from Block 18 (planted in 1979) at our Lodge Hill vineyard. We harvested the fruit at 12.2 Baumé. Fruit was stored in a cold room overnight to bring the temperature below 10˚C. Once destemmed and crushed, the fruit was then pressed into stainless steel for 12 hours to settle, before being racked into the 2,800-litre German oak ‘Fuder’ cask. The light lees were racked which assisted a wild ferment to take place after five days. Fermentation took four weeks with the temperature maintained at 18˚C. When residual sugar was below 10g/L, cooling was turned on to arrest the fermentation at 6g/L, achieving sugar-acid balance. The wine then rested on full yeast lees for 12 months at 10˚C before being transferred to stainless steel where it sat on fine lees at 0˚C for a further 11 months.

Our 2018 Wolta Wolta was bottled on 17th February 2020 and, after spending a year in bottle, was released on 9th March 2021. – The Barry family

Critic Reviews

The Wine Front

"Apple, lime, lavender and spice. Smooth, glossy feel, but with a chalky grip, juicy apple acidity, good length with it. A fresh sorbet kind of thing happening in the aftertaste. Quite different to your run-of-the-mill Clare Riesling." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"This is the bromance wine of Peter Barry and Mosel luminary Ernst Loosen, who met in 1995 over their love and respect of riesling. The winemaking is the same – hand-picked fruit off the Wolta Wolta block, wild-yeast fermentation in a 2800L German oak fuder and 12 months on lees. It's then racked off and spends another year in stainless steel. This is the second incarnation of this collaborative wine and a very fine follow-up. It's quite savoury, with a touch more phenolics adding to its shape. It does have the same texture, and off-dry feel that seems to be defining this wine. It's pure, it's energetic, it's something special yet again." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)
