About the Wine

On the southern slopes of Moppa, these low yielding Grenache vines date back to the early 60s, planted by Ian and Carl Albert Kalleske. Today, affable son Shawn Kalleske leads this family affair, turning out exceptional, world class wines without fanfare or bluster.

From tiny old vine berries, there’s a measured intensity to this. Silky, dark plum and boysenberry fruit supported by accents of chocolatey French oak and smokey graphite.

Whilst dense structure and fine tannin will hold this steady for the road ahead, it’s superb value for the quality, and delicious drinking right now.

About Laughing Jack

The Laughing Jack wines are a family affair that began in the Barossa Valley in 1999.

The Kalleske family are all involved here: parents Ian and Carol Kalleske alongside sons Nathan, Damon and Shawn who is the winemaker/grapegrower and general Jack of all trades in the winery

They have multiple vineyard across the region with their winery located in Marananga. These are honest, robust Barossa wines that show all the generosity and flavour that the region is famous for.

Halliday Wine Companion

"Shawn Kalleske's attentive, hand-made approach brings the sensitivity to let grenache shine. Structured, savoury and serious, understated berry fruits are accented by tomato and sage, with a core of sweet fruit lingering long through well-gauged dark chocolate French oak and a beautiful splay of fine, confident tannins. Proper grenache, with an exciting future before it." - Tyson Stelzer (Halliday Wine Companion)

"From a single vineyard planted in 1962. Seasoned oak only. 110 dozen produced. It’s a more robust expression of Grenache. but a very good one. A mix of black and red fruits, baking spice, sage, and a dried flower top note, which adds a pretty flourish. Dense, with a mix of ripe fruit and savoury elements, something along the lines of sun dried tomato and black olive tapenade, tannin is sooty and fleshy, and the finish rolls out very nicely, with ripe raspberry, spice and a saline character. Excellent. Should age nicely too." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)
