About The Wine

First release of the GT as a single block Shiraz - the GT can eiher stand for GrafTed or Gewurztraminer, as it is a block of Gewurz that was grafted over to Shiraz. Can you see you traces of the aromatic white....?

It's Shiraz that has been amplified all around without being OTT in the slightest. Huge spicy and floral smells, sweet-fruited meaty and tarry on the palate with rich, velvety waves of flavour.

Steve Pannell does genius things with his favourite Koomilya vineyard, and this brand new wine further adds to his already formidable arsenal of great McLaren Vale Shiraz.

About S.C. Pannell

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate.  They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!

He is truly one of the most forward thinking and inspirational Australian winemakers alive today.

From The Producer

A single block Shiraz from 30 year old vines grafted on Gewurztraminer planted in 1974 by Jill and Don Cant, the previous owners.

A gloriously complex perfume of lavender, thyme and spring herbs followed by Upper Tintarra’s signature aromas of iodine and seaweed. Bright red fruits soon kick in with a dusting of cocoa and rooibos tea. I can’t help but notice the spice and muscat aromas of gewurztraminer but not sure if it’s there or a suggestion of the rootstock.

The palate is loud and rumbunctious, a hurly burly tumble of tannins that speak to the struggle in getting these vines right. There is a sanguine richness to the palate and a suggestion of tomato sauce and caramelised onion on a long finish. Deeply complex and satisfying.

The Wine Front

"This is a single block, grafted over 30 years ago onto Gewürztraminer planted in 1974. No whole bunch, 20% new puncheon, and then 2800 litre vats. Dead set, the roots remember their origins here, because the wine shows all sorts of GT like perfume and spice.Spice, rose, lychee juiciness sitting over chocolate, iodine, dried herbs and red and black fruits. It’s stony and thick in tannin, roast meat, sun-dried tomato, black olives, a bold volume of dark berries, but savoury and distinctly umami in flavour. Tannin rolls on the finish, with a tacky and tactile feel, and the length is top notch. Acidity is bright too, and almost juicy. Fascinating wine. Distinctive." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

"The tannins, expansive and suede of texture, without the firmer stitch of the DC, or the ferruginous mettle of the JC. Still, ample, impactful and dutifully burly. The aromas disparate across all 3. Here, dark grey silt stone delivers a bright, highly aromatic wine that sits definitely in the savoury, mid-weighted niche. Lilac, musk, grape spice and pulpy blueberry accents, mingle with a judicious reductive clench and a long finish of pastille, Worcestershire and iodine. Elegant and southern Rhône in sensibility." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)
