About
Finish is very long, with a spiced poached strawberry and rhubarb thing happening, and lavish stony tannin. Wonderful.

About The Wine

This is a very special release for virtuoso winemaker, Steve Pannell.

Koomilya is a vineyard on the very edge of the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. This site has grown grapes for over 100 years and now finds itself under Steve's watchful eye.

It's one of Steve's proudest accomplishments, and rightfully so, the wine is incredible. This is Shiraz as pure and unadorned as possible. The truest representation of this special site that Steve could produce.

A wine for the real collectors, this is premium McLaren Vale Shiraz at its seductive best.

About S.C. Pannell

Quite simply, Stephen Pannell is one of Australia’s finest and most imaginative winemakers. He’s a Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, a McLaren Vale Bushing King winner, a two-time Max Schubert Trophy winner, International Red Winemaker of the Year and Decanter Magazine’s 50 Most Influential Contributors to the World of Wine. Nick Stock described him as potentially “one of the greatest Australian winemakers ever to make wines in our age”.

Steve’s wines are made with modern Australian food and wine culture at the front of mind. The wines come from a range of stunning McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills vineyards, and are made from sustainable varieties that properly suit his South Australian climate.  They're built around brightness of fruit and savoury tannin structure, and whatever your poison is Steve has you covered!

He is truly one of the most forward thinking and inspirational Australian winemakers alive today.

From The Producer

Simply stated, 2018 was a solid year. A vintage without extremes that was kind to both winemakers and vines alike.

A single block Shiraz from 46 year old vines grown on ancient dark grey slaty siltstone soils flecked with ironstone facing South East at an altitude of 108m.

I love the weight and elegant tap dance of the tannins that are unmistakably DC. Texturally like chewing on pomegranate seeds followed by afinish that is voluptuous and velvety with an upright bearing. Regal.

Blend : Shiraz (100%)
ABV : 13.5%
Closure : Screw Cap

The Wine Front

"Vines planted 46 years ago, 22% whole bunch, raised in second and third fill puncheons. The vineyard is a great place to visit, has a sort of ‘secret garden’ feel about it, but don’t mind me. They’re also doing good things with native bushland regeneration, and carbon capture.Liquorice, the sort of brittle dark toffee my Mum used to make, blackberry and blackcurrant, sea spray and oyster shells, biscuit spices, and thyme. It’s full of juicy and fresh small dark berried flavour, ferrous and deep, layers of pumice stone tannin, and for all the darkness, it’s still so light on its feet. Finish is very long, with a spiced poached strawberry and rhubarb thing happening, and lavish stony tannin. Wonderful." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

"11 days on skins resplendent with 22% whole bunches. Ditto the JC, or thereabouts. A more ferrous block, here. I am detecting some Aussie scrub that I didn’t sense when first poured. In the best way! Really aromatic and pulpy, with palate-staining density defied by a lightness of feel. The tannins drive a sumptuous finish, corralling any stray excess. Mulberry, violet, Dr Pepper and a wonderful creaminess that is far from oak-derived. A nostalgic ping with contemporary styling. A manifest of vineyard rejuvenation, historic celebration and future affirmation." - Ned Goodwin MW (Halliday Wine Companion)
