It’s all about that texture and drive for me...

About The Wine

The Koerner Riesling is grown on the Koerner family vineyard, Gullyview, in Watervale, Clare Valley.

This vineyard has been farmed by the Koerners for 35 years, the sons Damon and Jonathan are intimate with the fruit and it shows. This is Watervale Riesling with more character and texture than the 'classic' styles of wine the region is famous for.

The fruit was fermented in a combination of stainless and ceramic egg, spent 24 hours on skins and goes to the bottle with no fining, filtering or additions apart from a smidge of sulphur. It has texture and vitality and a load of interest.

Mike Bennie awarded it a huge 95 points, a new look at a staple of the Australian wine landscape by a family owned operation. Great stuff.

About Koerner

The Koerner brothers, Damon and Jono, are on a mission to bring the classic wine styles of the Clare Valley into the modern day.

They play with a mix of 'classic' Clare Valley varieties such as Riesling, Cabernet and Malbec and a suite of alternate varieties that show a different side of this iconic Australian wine region.

With fruit sourced from their own family vineyard and a move toward more contemporary winemaking, utilising terracotta and ceramic for fermenting and making as little additions as possible in the winery, it's easy to see why their star is on the rise.

As Mike Bennie recently wrote, "Some of the most interesting, delicious wines in Australia are emerging, and the reinvention and sexing up of Clare Valley is apparent."

Additional Info

From The Producer

The Riesling fruit used to produce this wine was grown on two sites of Gullyview Vineyard – G1 (Grace) which has a slight northern aspect, and the soil consists of heavy red clay over limestone.

The second site is GV1 (Gullyview), which is slightly higher in altitude and has more of a Southern aspect and the soil consists of a much bonier clay over limestone. Both blocks are 43 years old. The final blend is 75% G1 & 25% GV1. We hand picked over 3 days, the 23rd & 28th Febuary and the 2nd March. The wine is made up of 13 different ferments.

All had around 24 hours skin contact before pressing, the juice was then cold settled for 3 or 4 days before being transferred to either stainless tank, ceramic amphora or slovonian oak for ferment. Fermentation lasted around 3 weeks and the wine sat on the vessels on full lees for 2 months. After this the blend was decided and all the wine was racked to stainless where it sat on fine lees for 6 months.

The final blend is 50% stainless, 45% Ceramic & 5% new oak. Prior to bottling a small sulphur addition was made, the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The Wine Front

"Un-fined, unfiltered, textural riesling of unique personality from Clare Valley – a real side step from cookie cutter/regional staples. This label, from generational grape-grower-winemaker brothers, is absolutely soaring. Some of the most interesting, delicious wines in Australia are emerging, and the reinvention and sexing up of Clare Valley is apparent. While this wine isn’t in the bandwidth of Clare riesling stalwarts, it goes a long way speaking about complexity, approachability and personality potential.Hazy pale gold in colour. A beautiful wine of powdery texture, inward juiciness, great length, tight and taut feel. There’s lemon-lime meets ginger scents, some similarity to the restrained flavours, but it’s all about that texture and drive for me. A wine that shows diversity of personality to enhance the Clare Valley story, with immense drinkability in tow." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Once I found the corkscrew

On opening, there was an immediate aroma of port wine magnolia. The wine is complex, simultaneously plush and zingy. It’s sure to get your attention by delivering both pink lady apples and fleshy fruits like paw paw with a light creamy edge. There’s a promise of potential in every sip. Just make sure the corkscrew is handy, you make want more, its that engaging.

Surprising Clare Valley Special

I love my Riesling, and I have a particular affection for traditional Clare Valley styles. So when I had my first mouthful of the 2018 Koerner Watervale Riesling, I was sort of "Harrumph this isn't a proper Riesling - not enough steel in the finish."

However, it only took about ten minutes and a few mouthfuls to completely change my mind. I realised its all about balance and here is an exceptionally well-balanced wine. Great length and depth of flavour for a young Riesling. Some citrus and Asian spice elements on the palate finishing with (my favourite wine term) stone sucking minerality.

I immediately ordered some more.
