About The Wine

This stunning 'IJM' Pinot Noir is a tribute to Gembrook Hill founder Ian Marks.  It was first produced in 2017 after his sudden death, with Ian's son and star winemaker in his own right Andrew Marks wanting to craft a premium release in Ian's honour.

2018 has also seen Andrew release a second premium release, named 'JKM' after Andrew's mother June who still works alongside Andrew.  Both wines come from a small block of excellent Pinot fruit on the Gembrook Hill vineyard, and while JKM sees some extra winemaking experimentation, this wine is all about this remarkable vineyard.

The dry 2018 season has resulted in great structure, with power and complexity dancing in tandem with the natural elegance and brightness this site provides.

It's a glorious Pinot, and with just 80 dozen produced definitely one to tuck away for that special occassion.

About Gembrook Hill

Based in the cool upper reaches of the Yarra Valley, Gembrook Hill is one of the country's most loved producers of Pinot Noir.

Founded in 1983 by Ian and June Marks, Gembrook is one of the most picturesque vineyards in the region. As well as their stunning Pinot Noirs, they produce excellent examples of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and an elegant Blanc de Blanc in certain vintages.

Ian Marks sadly passed away in 2017. His son Andrew now tends the family vineyard and makes the wines, continuing the family legacy for producing outstanding examples of Upper Yarra wine.

Additional Info

From the Producer

In 2017 the visceral reaction to the sudden death of Ian was to produce a wine in his honour. This was a tiny batch of Pinot Noir drawn from a portion of the oldest Pinot vines on the property, and a third drawn from the newest MV6 young vines. This blend represented something of the snake eating its own tail – the Ouroboros or symbol for eternal cyclic renewal. In other words, recognition that Gembrook Hill had become a legacy vineyard for our family. The IJM, Ian James Marks, was made as a pure expression of site, matured in old French oak to allow terroir to shine through. A quintessential vigneron's wine, to reflect Ian's passion for the vineyard.

Vintage Details

Wines from Vintage 2018 are maturing well in barrel. 2018 was a tale of two seasons with some of the most challenging humid weather ever experienced during the growing season (Oct-Dec 2017) followed by exceptionally dry conditions after Christmas. We are very excited with the resulting wines but more on that in good time.

The Wine Front

"For the legendary Ian Marks from his wonderful family.  Perfumed and succulent pinot of inward concentration but brilliant freshness, an almost crystal cut feel but for the swish of sappy, fine ribbons of tannin. What ho. A wine of quietness and beauty, graceful in its movement and feel, such wonderful texture and brightness to flavour. Picture perfect, or close. An experience and memorable." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine.
