About
One of my Australian rieslings of the year.

About The Wine

It's hit after hit down at Garagiste HQ, and Barney Flanders has smashed another one out of the park with this stunning and original Riesling.

Mornington Peninsula isn't typically known for its Riesling but this one is out of the box.  The fruit comes from 30-year-old vines, is hand-picked and whole bunch pressed to old barriques before a natural ferment and then left to rest on lees for eight months before heading to bottle. Simple yet thoughtful winemaking from Barney here yielding a wine with serious X-Factor.

Barney reckons it's "way better than Alsace". Mike Bennie simply stated, "Holy shit this is good... One of my Australian rieslings of the year.", and we're sure you're going to enjoy this thrill-a-minute and seriously well-priced Riesling!

About Garagiste

Garagiste is the brainchild of Barnaby Flanders.

After leaving Allied Wines in 2003 he embarked on a mission to produce small batch premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay under his own label in his beloved Mornington Peninsula.

Barney loves the sub-regionality to be exploited in Mornington Peninsula, the slight alterations in aspect and soil profile within this small wine producing region provide him with the scaffolding around which he builds his stunning harem of small batch wines.

They are only ever made in small quantities so time is of the essence if you want to explore the world of Garagiste.

From The Producer

2018 welcomes a trio of cameo appearances under the increasingly impressive Le Stagiaire label. Like the 2018 Sauvignon, the Riesling is cropped from Red Hill vines planted in sand over brown loam. The fruit from these 30-year-old vines is hand-picked and whole bunch pressed to old barriques. The fermentation is spontaneous and the wine spends eight months nourishing on its ferment lees before bottling. Barney writes that it's 'way better than Alsace'. What would he know! It's a cracking release for sure. The new label ain't bad either.

The Wine Front

"Holy shit this is good. Barney Flanders is insanely good at his quarry. Natural ferment and kept on lees. Great fruit it seems.  Texture, personality, freshness, complexity. Has it all. Lemon-lime, rub of salt, nuts and oats, lick of blackcurrant, citrusy exit. More about savouriness than fruitiness though. Long, lavish feel, ribbed with talc-like puckering character and all that saline-nutty goodness, all so well integrated into fruitiness. One of my Australian rieslings of the year." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Halliday Wine Companion

"Bright, polished straw with a hint of reduction, dried apple and some white pepper. Tarte tatin before it's been caramelised perhaps. It may not be that aromatic, but the texture makes up for it. Glassy, smooth and mouth coating - dried and cooked apples, some gingery spice and al dente phenolics." - David Bicknell (Halliday Wine Companion)

What A Zinger!

Epic Riesling. Not like anything I've had from Aus. More saline/savoury, almost like a thirst-crushing margarita in wine form. Loved it. Bought more.

I may be converted

Tried the 2018 Garagiste Le Stagiaire Riesling recently and it was lovely. I opened bottle of a ‘straight up stainless steel tank” Riesling and sampled the two together. The 2 018 Garagiste Le Stagiaire Riesling delivered far more complex flavours than the traditional Riesling. I found that as the 2018 Garagiste Le Stagiaire Riesling warmed in the glass there was a slight resiny (stemsy) residual taste, as contrasted with the crisp traditional finish. The overall complexity of the wine more than made up for it though. I think I’m a natural wines convert.

Are there volume discounts?

No our pricing is aiming to the best in the market already. For very large orders (weddings etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call. How does the price match work?

Everyday Low & Consistent Pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll match it. We'll even retrospectively refund you if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. Our price match policy can be seen here.

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me?

This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 1300 668 385 or hello@differentdrop.com and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.

Does Different Drop have a physical store?

Can I special order a wine you do not sell?

If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
