About the Wine
This old vine, 100% Grenache bottling is a reminder that the Houillon estate is not far from the exceptional Rhône villages of Rasteau and Cairanne.
Sourced from biodynamically tended 70-year-old vines, there’s density, structure and power behind this wine. The sheer quality of the fruit being farmed ensures Houillon’s long, gentle steeping of the skins, extracts a fine balance of flavour and tannin.
With its heady dark spices and some lovely rustic charm, give this time and good company to let it show all its generous profile.
About Domaine Houillon
The Houillon name is well known in the Jura where sibling trio Emmanuel, Adeline and Aurelien all learnt with the legendary master Pierre Overnoy.
After spending time in Switzerland gaining further experience in biodynamic farming, younger brother Aurelien and wife Charlotte hitched their cart west, settling in the southern Rhône foothills in the shadow of the famous Mont Ventoux.
Commencing in 2016, they’ve been faithfully restoring a beautiful old 9 hectare property, with just 4.5 hectares planted to vines. Working with old vine Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault, they’re certified organic and farm according to biodynamic practices. All the wines are unfiltered and bottled by gravity without addition of sulphur.
Given the relative altitude of their minuscule estate, committed farming and sensitive handling in the cellar, the Houillons are producing some exciting, balanced and fragrant expressions, previously unseen in this part of the Southern Rhône.
