About

About The Wine

A bit of a unique offering here from Jasper & Sophie Button.

The Basketolo is made from homegrown Nebbiolo (and a little Pinot Noir) from their family-owned vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. The clone of Nebbiolo (111) is traditionally used for making Rosé, here, they've made a wine that sits somewhere between a red and Rosé and it's incredibly tasty.

All about freshness and drinkability, this will even take a slight chill when the weather calls for it.

A completely individual release from Bro and Sis Button with off the charts smashability.

About Commune of Buttons

Siblings Jasper and Sophie Button returned home a few years ago to help save their family vineyard, planted primarily to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay 20 years ago by their mother.

They began restoring the site and transitioning to organic and biodynamic principles, and at some point decided that rather than sell off their prized grapes to others, they’d turn their hand to winemaking.

Just a couple vintages in, the results have been fantastic. The wines are made naturally with only minimal sulphur additions and slow, gentle ferments. The Buttons wines are as loveable as the family who made them.

From The Producer

The 2018 year was an excellent year for ripening with cool and dry days that continued well into autumn. The cool nights that accompanied these miraculous days provided excellent conditions for the full maturation of the 8 rows of Nebbiolo found sitting next to the Clover vineyard at the commune. We waited until Anzac day to pick, a full month after the last of the chardonnay, with all of the surrounding vines turning yellow and losing the first of their leaves. The bunches were ripe. The fermentation was for three weeks. We kept it warm with blankets pumping over twice a day religiously. The smell of red frogs and musk filled the winery as it had in Piemonte. We tasted the wine every day looking for tannin and structure. Once we were satisfied we pressed into tank allowed the wine to go through malo-lactic fermentation. We then racked off gross lees and filled a 500L barrel. The wine was aged for 18months and bottled in august of 2019. It has been aging in bottle for 1 year and is still very fresh. The wine has the characteristic red fruits of nebbiolo ripe cherries cardamom and currants, with persistent long ashy tannins. Its still a baby but is accessible and highly enjoyable, particularly on the 3rd and 4th day of opening. Only 750 bottles produced

"Ripe cherry, squishy red berry scents, whiffs of animale and fennel and clove. Fruit forward up front and then the cavalcade of brick dust tannins, a very light wine taken over by chew and pucker. A very good drink here, has prettiness though you’ll have to like the pucker and chomp of seriously serious tannins. Not overmade, a very nice thing to get into." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
