2018 Cantina Giardino Bianco Chianzano

Campania, Italy

A complex and captivating skin-contact blend from Cantina Giardino, Italy's masters of the wild and wonderful.

Complex, serious, so good, so very detailed, such an excellent ‘experience’ wine.

About the Wine

From the Campania region of Italy comes another wonderful effort from Cantina Giardino. Very much a local blend, consisting of about two-thirds Coda di Volpe and one-third Greco di Tufo, from organically farmed vineyards, some young and some old.

A six day maceration to kick things off before part of the juice goes into chestnut botti and the rest into amphora for fermentation and maturation. Left completely alone for 18 months and then bottled as is.

Despite the short extraction, plenty of colour here, well and truly in the 'orange' spectrum. An array of aromas ranging from citrus and stonefruit right through to dried herbs and nuttiness. Plenty of texture yet still refreshing and energetic, this is one to sit down with, ponder and deeply enjoy.

About Cantina Giardino

Cantina Giardino is one of Italy's most interesting, delicious and dynamic natural wine producers.

What started out in 1997 as project between four people to save some old vineyards is now solely run by Antonio and Daniela Di Gruttola. They own and rent vineyards throughout the main wine-growing areas of Campania in central Italy - think of Naples and go inland and up...

They release fascinating whites made from Coda di Volpe, Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino among others, and reds mostly from Aglianico. Stylistically? Well they do a bit of everything, with lots of skin contact, raising in amphora, always wild yeast ferments, and never any sulphur additions.

The wines are murky, lively, and often deliciously confronting. The small stocks that arrive down under disappear quickly.

From the Importer

This vintage is a blend of coda di volpe bianco and greco from Montemarano, which has a very different type of soil to that of the Greco di Tufo zone, mostly calcareous marl with limestone and clay. Five days maceration on skins then part goes to chestnut botti and part into amphora. A bit more rustic than the 2019s but an absolute pleasure to drink.

Blend : Coda di Volpe (70%), Greco di Tufo (30%)
ABV : 12.5%
Closure : Cork
Drink Until : 2026

The Wine Front

"Coda di volpe and greco in a blend that sees four days on skins. Deep orange colour. Sweet, stone fruit scents with whiffs of dried leaves, salted peanuts, juniper. Deeply flavoured but very, very fresh, very chewy texture with fine, silty tannins. Complex, serious, so good, so very detailed, such an excellent ‘experience’ wine while being so very compelling to drink. Wonderful." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)

Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy).
