About

About The Wine

Burn Cottage is one of the most celebrated Pinot Noirs in New Zealand, and this another tremendous release, that could be enjoyed young but would be best kept in the cellar for a few years.

A biodynamic vineyard from day one, this site has been groomed to perfection to produce Pinot Noir that can rival any in the world. Many believe this to be one of the most impressive versions of Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy.

Planted in only 2003, each year the vines get older, and the more intense and complex the wine gets. It's the rare combination of power and finesse that sets the Burn Cottage Pinot Noir apart.

About Burn Cottage

Burn Cottage was founded by husband and wife team Marquis Sauvage and Dianne Sauvage in 2002.

They'd searched the 'New World' for the perfect site to plant a great Pinot Noir vineyard. This special site, a sheep farm in Central Otago, was where they chose to plant.

They employed a rock-star team to kick off the project. World-renowned, Burgundian-trained winemaker Ted Lemon came on board, leading biodynamic experts Peter Proctor and his partner Rachel Pomeroy were employed to consult on establishing the vines.

The vineyard has been biodynamic since inception. The focus, a single-minded mission to produce truly world-class Pinot Noir.

From The Producer

Lovely savoury dry herb and dark earth tones partner with bright red fruits, a hint of citrus and warm spice. Initially restrained, the wine unfolds with energy, focus and layers of complexity. Silky ripe tannins and fine mineral acidity extend throughout the palate. Showing wonderful texture, layers and completeness, we expect this wine to have a cellaring potential of 8-10 years.

Grapes were hand-picked from the Burn Cottage Vineyard in Cromwell, Central Otago between 15th and 25th March, with an average Brix at harvest of 23.4. Eight different Pinot Noir clones from nine vineyard blocks made the final blend. The ferments contained 16% whole clusters, with the wine spending an average of 20 days on skins. The wine was matured in French oak barrels (23% new) from the Damy, Mercurey and Sylvain cooperages.

"This is a very attractive and gently complex pinot that sits in a red-cherry and red-plum zone, laced with spicy, gently herbal and floral elements, too. The palate has a very composed, fresh red-cherry centre with spice and light peppery nuances. Plenty of bright acidity lifts the finish. So fresh. Drink or hold." - Nick Stock (JamesSuckling.com)

"All cherry and pip, dried herb perfume and chamomile, plus a modest amount of gently smoky oak. It’s fleshy and juicy, again bright cherry flavour, some blood orange and peel lending a subtle amaro tang, soft acidity, supple emery tannin, and a spicy finish of fine length. Excellent expression of Otago, and a fine drink it is too." - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front)

If your order is placed before 12pm we’ll get it on the truck that day. Delivery times vary considerably with Australia Post and unfortunately there is no Express Delivery Option for wine (because it is fragile and heavy). PLEASE NOTE that we are currently seeing significant delays in the Australia Post delivery network. Strict government health and safety requirements and very high parcel volumes are causing significant backlogs at the main NSW and VIC sorting facilities. Orders are still arriving safe and sound but you may notice slower delivery times and less frequent scanning updates than usual.

FaQs

Do I have to order in dozens? No, please mix it up! You can order wines in any quantity and variation you like. You can order 1 bottle or 50. We challenge you to make the ultimate mixed pack of wine!

Are there volume discounts? No, our pricing is designed to be the best in market already - no marking up and then discounting down! For very large orders (weddings, etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call.

Do we price match? Yes, within reason. Everyday low & consistent pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll consider matching it. We'll even retrospectively issue you store credit if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. Our price match policy can be seen here.

Can coupons and discounts be stacked? No, only one discount or coupon can be applied to an order at once.

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Just contact us on 1300 668 385 or hello@differentdrop.com and we'll organise the additional quantity for you.

Does Different Drop have a physical store? No. Just an a warehouse/office. We occasionally do events however, so sign up to our newsletter or follow us on instagram to stay in the loop.

Can I special order a wine you do not sell? If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
