About

About The Wine

A McLaren Vale producer's range would not be complete without a Shiraz, and Brad Hickey’s (AKA Brash Higgins) does not disappoint.

The fruit for his ‘SHZ’ was hand selected from the now organically certified Omensetter vineyard in the Vale, a vineyard renowned for producing a distinctively savoury style of Shiraz.

A wine of balance, finesse and class,  a different slant on the McLaren Vale flagship variety. This is where interest and deliciousness meet in Shiraz land.

About Brash Higgins

Brash Higgins is the label of winemaking American-turned-honorary-Aussie, Brad Hickey.

In his former life, Hickey was one of America's top sommeliers, working for many years crafting some of New York's finest wine lists. He came to Australia and fell in love with McLaren Vale and local vigneron Nicole Thorpe, with whom he now produces highly characterful, minimalist wines from their much loved Omensetter vineyard.

Hickey's wines are extremely expressive. They fall in two camps - the wines sourced from Omensetter vineyard and those sourced from friends around the Vale and the warm, dry Riverlands.

If you want 'classic' McLaren Vale, or if you want the true avant-garde, it's all available in the Brash Higgins range.

From The Producer

Made from 21 year old shiraz vines grown at the Organic Brash Higgins estate Omensetter Vineyard. 2018 in the Vale is solid year, even after a very damaging hailstorm in November reduced the yield by 20%. The result of this hail haircut resulted in even more fruit intensity from the surviving grapes. Vinted from hand selected fruit, 20% whole bunch, and sent to open one ton fermenters for 3 weeks. Wild yeast did their job and then it all was gently basket pressed and sent to a mix of new and older French hogsheads for 20 months

‘A wine built for the ages: the nose of the Brash SHZ is brooding with black plums, chorizo, blood orange zest, spicy paprika, nutmeg and liquorice. There’s a sweet earthy note that is typical of Omensetter Vineyard’s red clay. The palate is generous, well-balanced and smooth, the tannins integrated, and the finish long with complex, interweaving berry and spice notes.’ – Brad Hickey, 10 November 2020.

The Wine Front

"Certified organic vineyard (Omensetter) which is the home farm of Brash Higgins wine. A 1997 planting. Fancy red. Full figured red wine of dark berry, plummy fruit, dark chocolate, nori and soy sauce notes. Bold flavours, distinct warm berry characters, suede tannins and a lifting ride of fresh, orange-y acidity. Quite savoury in its way, good heft and drive, identifiably McLaren Vale, per se, but with a bit of extra freshness to it all. Feels good." - Mike Bennie (The Wine Front)
