About

About The Wine

Arriving in Uruguay with Basque settlers in the 19th century, Tannat’s a red grape with thick skins, offering perfect protection from the wet Atlantic winds.

Garzon’s stunning winery and restaurant are just inland from the coast, with a range of reds perfectly matched to star Argentinian chef Francis Mallman’s open fire cooking.

With its approachable flavours of dusty dark cherry, bramble and spice this is well judged and supple, with just enough structure.

About Bodega Garzon

Established in 2010 by Argentinian Alejandro Bulgheroni, Bodega Garzon has changed the landscape of Uruguayan wine.

With accomplished winemaking consultant Alberto Antonini adding his guidance, it is an ambitious, world class project doing big things to build the profile of this little South American country’s rich winemaking heritage.

Working chiefly with its celebrated red grape Tannat, the wet, windy Atlantic influence has also inspired significant plantings of the white Albarino.

Critic Reviews

DDS review

"Very dark crimson, almost black at the core. Dark fruit that is ripe yet counterbalanced by a lovely stone-dust freshness. This has become more refined and complex since I tasted it in embryonic form 18 months ago. There is still a rich foundation of black fruit but also a touch of pepper and a delicate floral character, or perhaps it is lavender. Still plenty of firm and very fine tannins, juicy too and persistent. This is now at a perfect moment for drinking, especially with food, but is clearly going to continue to age well, and longer than I first thought. The oak has died back to reveal the key components of this wine: the fresh dark fruit, the super-fine but shaping tannins and that mineral quality that adds more freshness.'' - Julia Harding (Jancis Robinson)

DDS review

"Dark berries with blanched almonds and violets on the nose. Medium to full body. Fine, integrated tannins and a silky texture. Lovely length and juiciness." - James Suckling (James Suckling)
