Nicholas Brown - 2022 NZ Winemaker of the Year!
Gourment Traveller Wine Magazine
About the Wine
This Chardonnay comes from the young vines in Black Estate's Home vineyard, that were planted in 2011.
The vines yielded excellent quality fruits, boasting ripeness and a fresh acidity. It comes as no surprise that these fantastic grapes birthed such a wonderfully fresh drop as this Chardonnay.
It's a fresh and zingy drop, with your typical stone-fruity character mixed with a hint of nuttiness, but it also has a racy mineral, saline edge to it. Sure to be a crowd pleaser.
About Black Estate
Black Estate was founded in Waipara in 1993 when Russell Black planted 8 hectares of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In 2007, Pen Naish and her winemaker husband, Nicholas Brown, took over - and it's been expanding ever since, now with 24 hectares across three vineyards.
They use organic and biodynamic farming (certified with BioGro) to really focus on the life and environment of the vineyard, as well as the health and quality of all things within it - the soils, vines and fruits. They use a hands-off, minimalistic approach to their winemaking to really allow each of their exclusively single vineyard wines to really showcase each site, allowing the final product to express its environment in a pure form.
Winemaker Nicholas Brown gained acclaim in early 2022 taking out the Gourmet Traveller Wine New Zealand Winemaker of the Year.
