About The Wine

Vermentino is one of the emerging Italian white grape varieties that is proving very successful in Australia.

Winemaker Jo Marsh once again sums it up perfectly: "It’s just such a great, accessible variety and I think a really good alternative to Sauv Blanc or Pinot G." As she told us, "it's all about picking at the right time with Vermy, you want those great ripe fruit flavours but also the acid to keep it fresh."

There's some really clever winemaking in this, with wild yeasts, full solids, partial malo and lees stirring all adding subtly chewy texture to the pristine and pure fruit.

Jo calls this wine 'The Versatile' and that's exactly what it is - great with food, great as a refreshing Summer white, great as a thought-provoking conversation starter.

Billy Button is the charming Alpine Valleys based project of ubertalented winemaker Jo Marsh, now helped by her winemaker husband Glenn James and young winemaker Alex Phillips.

Billy Button focuses primarily on producing small batches of alternative varieties from good local growers in their small patch of Victoria. The team explores varieties that are rarely seen in the Australian landscape - you can find anything from Schioppettino to Verduzzo in this eclectic range.

Jo's gentle touch in the winery makes for beautifully balanced wines that show great texture and vibrancy. The Billy Button range is a little gem of North East Victoria. It's one of the more unique wine ranges in the country and the perfect place to begin your exploration of alternative varieties.

From The Producer

The Alpine Valleys region boasts a proud Italian-origin population, many of them second or third generation who have followed their parents in to crop growing. Tobacco used to be a significant industry, hence the iconic kiln houses that dot the landscape. Once tobacco declined, many took to growing grapes and hence the area has several Italian grape varieties, including this Vermentino which is grown in various Italian regions, originating in Sardinia. This fruit comes from the Ferraro Vineyard at Myrtleford. Growing this sun loving variety in a cool climate means that Jo is able to pick the fruit a little riper while still having good acidity, which results in a richer more textural style of Vermentino.

Production Notes

The handpicked grapes were whole bunch pressed. The juice was then settled overnight and roughly racked to ferment, which took place in stainless steel using wild yeasts. The wine stayed on ferment lees for 3 months with occasional stirring to enrich the texture and add complexity. The wine was then filtered and bottled.

"Hand-picked, with one batch crushed and given textural authority via contact with the skins before an inoculated ferment in tank; the other batch, whole-bunch pressed and fermented spontaneously on solids in flexcube. Following time on lees, they were blended. The result is a multi-dimensional wine of a zinging freshness, but a countering richness, too. Do I have to order in dozens? No, please mix it up! You can order wines in any quantity and variation you like. You can order 1 bottle or 50. We challenge you to make the ultimate mixed pack of wine!

Are there volume discounts? No, our pricing is designed to be the best in market already - no marking up and then discounting down! For very large orders (weddings, etc) we are open to negotiating though. Just give us a call.

Do we price match? Yes, within reason. Everyday low & consistent pricing is something we strongly believe in. We want our customers to feel confident they are always getting the best price. If you see a price lower somewhere else let us know and we'll consider matching it. We'll even retrospectively issue you store credit if you have already purchased from us but you see a lower price somewhere later on. Our price match policy can be seen here.

Can coupons and discounts be stacked? No, only one discount or coupon can be applied to an order at once.

I am trying to add more of a wine to my cart but it won’t let me? This means we are running low on stock of that wine. So for example, if the website will only allow you to add 3 bottles and no more, then that is all we have of that particular wine. The good news is we may be able to order more for you. Does Different Drop have a physical store? No. Just an a warehouse/office. We occasionally do events however, so sign up to our newsletter or follow us on instagram to stay in the loop.

Can I special order a wine you do not sell? If it’s doable, then we’ll make it happen. Just contact us directly via phone, chat or email and we’ll find out for you right away. Please note that in most cases special orders such as these will need to be in full case lots (6 or 12 bottles).
