About The Wine

Jo Marsh is a virtuoso winemaker when it comes to nursing Italian varieties to bottle.

The problem with many Australian examples of Sangiovese is that they lack vibrancy, not the case here. This is a juicy, loveable version of Sangiovese with plenty of charm.

Jo uses five different clones from two different Alpine Valleys vineyards to get just the right amount of light and shade in this release.

If you're looking for the perfect pizza night wine, this is pretty hard to go past.

About Billy Button

Billy Button is the charming Alpine Valleys based project of ubertalented winemaker Jo Marsh, now helped by her winemaker husband Glenn James and young winemaker Alex Phillips.

Billy Button focuses primarily on producing small batches of alternative varieties from good local growers in their small patch of Victoria. The team explores varieties that are rarely seen in the Australian landscape - you can find anything from Schioppettino to Verduzzo in this eclectic range.

Jo's gentle touch in the winery makes for beautifully balanced wines that show great texture and vibrancy. The Billy Button range is a little gem of North East Victoria. It's one of the more unique wine ranges in the country and the perfect place to begin your exploration of alternative varieties.

Additional Info

From The Producer

Sangiovese is the most widely planted variety in Italy, in recent years superior clonal material has been imported into Australia to elevate the quality of the Australian version. Sourced from 2 vineyards at Whorouly South on the western edge of the region. The Bungamero vineyard owned and operated by Tim and Mark Walpole is a mixture of MAT6 and MAT7 clones while Bob and Helen MacNamara’s Con Mara vineyard has equal amounts of VCR4, VCR6 and MAT4.

Production Notes

The fruit was crushed directly into open tubs and spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeast was allowed. The ferments were gently plunged twice daily and pressed Flexcube for maturation on lees for 10 months prior to filtration and bottling.
