About The Wine

Refosco, as Jo Marsh points out on the label, might just be the perfect picnic red.

As we explore more and more varieties that are better suited to our climate and lifestyle, varieties like Refosco are finding plenty of fans. They offer huge appeal in the easy-drinking, don't-think-too-hard wines category.

Refosco doesn't mind a chill, and it doesn't require fancy stemware, it's a red made for knocking back in the park with friends.

Get a frisbee and get stuck into it!

About Billy Button

Billy Button is the charming Alpine Valleys based project of ubertalented winemaker Jo Marsh, now helped by her winemaker husband Glenn James and young winemaker Alex Phillips.

Billy Button focuses primarily on producing small batches of alternative varieties from good local growers in their small patch of Victoria. The team explores varieties that are rarely seen in the Australian landscape - you can find anything from Schioppettino to Verduzzo in this eclectic range.

Jo's gentle touch in the winery makes for beautifully balanced wines that show great texture and vibrancy. The Billy Button range is a little gem of North East Victoria. It's one of the more unique wine ranges in the country and the perfect place to begin your exploration of alternative varieties.

From The Producer

Refosco is a relatively rare variety in Australia that originates from Friuli in North East Italy. It is naturally very high in the compound rotundone, which is responsible for the pepper character in red wines. It is a high acid, late ripening variety that tends to produce lighter bodied wines with lovely perfume.

Production Notes

Produced from 2 separate vineyards picked about a week apart, each parcel was handpicked and gently destemmed direct to open tubs then cold soaked for 3 days. They were then allowed to warm and fermented using wild yeasts. The ferments were gently plunged twice daily and were allowed two weeks on skins. Parcels were then pressed out to a combination of Flexcube and old oak where they were matured on lees for 10 months prior to bottling.

"A deceptive wine, it sneaks up gently then explodes with flavour and definition. Teetering on medium-bodied with blackberries on the cusp of ripeness, Alpine herbs, pine needle coolness and a taut acid line coupled with raw silk-like tannins to close." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)
