About

About The Wine

This is one of the only individual bottlings of this variety in the country.

Originating in Friuli, Malvasia is a rich, full-bodied white variety that is a great alternative to something like Roussanne or Chardonnay.

The great thing about Jo Marsh's wines, is that while they stay true to the variety, the thumbprint of the winemaker is ever present. This is a textural, aromatic wine, made to go a range of different foods. It's something different, to be sure, but it sure is tasty.

About Billy Button

Billy Button is the charming Alpine Valleys based project of ubertalented winemaker Jo Marsh, now helped by her winemaker husband Glenn James and young winemaker Alex Phillips.

Billy Button focuses primarily on producing small batches of alternative varieties from good local growers in their small patch of Victoria. The team explores varieties that are rarely seen in the Australian landscape - you can find anything from Schioppettino to Verduzzo in this eclectic range.

Jo's gentle touch in the winery makes for beautifully balanced wines that show great texture and vibrancy. The Billy Button range is a little gem of North East Victoria. It's one of the more unique wine ranges in the country and the perfect place to begin your exploration of alternative varieties.

From The Producer

Malvasia originates from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of North East Italy. Jo was given access to this variety for the first time in 2015 and jumped at the chance to try her hand at making another relatively unknown alternative variety. Without knowing a lot about the variety, she kept winemaking to a minimum to allow the variety to full express itself. This is her third time making the variety and it is still a bit of a mystery to her - it does not tell her what it wants to be as loudly as other varieties. Sourced from the Mulcahy Vineyard at Porepunkah

Production Notes

The fruit was machine picked and pressed, with a small component held on skins overnight to build texture and cultivate intense fruit flavours that are held in the skin. The wine was fermented in a combination of Flexcube and old oak on full solids using indigenous yeasts and was then matured for a further 10 months on lees with occasional stirring.

"This really takes time to reveal itself; it's in the zone now, unveiling all its qualities from dried pears, char-grilled pineapple and ground ginger to creamy-buttery-curd-like flavours. It's ripe and fleshy with layers of textural phenolics, and while there's a richness and a sensation of sweetness, it is a savoury wine." - Jane Faulkner (Halliday Wine Companion)
