About The Wine

As always, this wine from Best's is one of the most approachable and easy-to-enjoy Rieslings around.

Best's have a long history with this variety, with winemaker Justin Purser suggesting this release from the well-balanced, long and cool 2017 vintage is more reminiscent of those Rieslings from the 80's and 90's with its balance, delicacy and easy charm.

It received a glowing 94 point review from Campbell Mattinson, and was named in James Halliday's Top 100 Wines of 2018 with an emphatic 96 point review.

Remarkable value!

About Best's Great Western

Best's Great Western is one of the oldest family-owned wineries in the country.

Their iconic Nursery Block is home to some of the oldest clonal material for particular varieties that can be found anywhere in the world. Established in the late 1860s, this precious vineyard is envied by much of the wine growing world.

Their wines are consistently excellent: the Shiraz dark and powerful, the Rieslings full flavoured and impeccably balanced, and the rare releases of Old Vine Meunier and Thomson Family Shiraz are some of the most collectable red wines in the country.

The Thomson family, and the Best family before them, have given us one of the true treasures of the Australian wine scene.

From The Producer

A real insider’s wine, or another Best Kept Secret, Great Western Riesling is aromatic and flavoursome yet structured and spectacularly age-worthy. Best's Rieslings stand confidently alongside their acclaimed South Australian cousins. The Great Western region lends itself well to producing exceptional Rieslings – its diurnal weather patterns (warm days/cold nights) work well for this varietal. Some of our original nursery plantings can be traced back to Germany, so there's a significant history and pedigree in the root stock of Great Western Riesling.

Grown on the sandy loams of the Concongella Creek and the Rhymney Vineyard sites, and occasionally from selected local vineyards, Best’s Riesling shows the intensity and finesse that are hallmarks of the Great Western region. The wine is made to show true varietal characteristics, achieved by letting the pristine fruit shine above all else. It is cold fermented in stainless steel tanks, retaining the fruit’s inherent aromatics and acidity. Balance, texture and fruit flavour make for an accessible, food-friendly wine. And while made to drink now, it will definitely age for many years to come. We can testify that Best’s Great Western Rieslings from the 1970s are drinking superbly now.

Vintage - The vineyard got off to a great start, but dry conditions throughout the spring triggered a devastating frost on 4th November. The grapes on the lower vineyards were lost, but those on higher elevations where largely unaffected.  Apart from a few warm days in January the conditions were excellent and perfect ripening weather continued long into the Autumn. A standout year for Riesling with high natural acidity and fine flavours and aromas.

Critic Reviews

96Points
Halliday Wine Companion

"Pale straw-green; the bouquet is enticing, but it's the palate that sends all the senses into overdrive. Intense lime juice intersects with shiny bright acidity. This takes mouthwatering flavours onto new levels. Great length inevitably follows, promising a very long life. The Great Western subregion deserves far greater recognition for its rieslings." - James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion)

The Wine Front

"Bit of a treat. Scintillating style, juiciness and length. Meyer lemon, lime, red apple and slate. Unencumbered lines. Pleasure and pain, in a good way. Oh the acidity." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

95Points
Gourmet Traveller WINE

"This has some nutty savoury nuances to go with the more typical dried-herb and citrus aromas, while the balance is slightly off-dry and ultra-charming. The high acidity offsets the sweetness and leads to a nervy, tangy, super-refreshing palate." - GT WINE
