2018 Bannockburn Serre Pinot Noir

Geelong, VIC

Iconic, one-of-a-kind Pinot Noir from this enigmatic producer.

Personally I think it’s pretty much fantastic.

About The Wine

The Serre Pinot Noir vineyard is the jewel in the crown of Bannockburn.

This Burgundian inspired close planted site produces an astonishingly small amount of fruit. Average yield for these 13 rows is a meagre 500g per vine, similar to the level of production of the prized Grand Cru vineyards of Burgundy.

Serre is an intense and savoury wine of detail and persistence. Fermented with 20% whole bunches and left to sit on skins for over two weeks, every ounce of nuance from this stunning vineyard is masterfully distilled into the bottle by winemaker, Matt Holmes.

It's a wine of rare power and unique character built for the collector and aficionado.

About Bannockburn

For decades, the Bannockburn vineyard has been producing Burgundian-inspired wines which truly reflect the winery's unique terroir.

Originally planted by the legendary Gary Farr, the wines that comes from this unique vineyard in Geelong show a rare sense of place. The ancient riverbed soils impart a distinct saline character and a power which makes the wines from this place immediately identifiable.

With the arrival of new head winemaker, Matt Holmes, the next chapter of Bannockburn's long history has commenced.

New ideas, a fresh take, the start of something new and exciting for this famous patch of earth.

From The Producer

Pinot Noir grown at Serré Vineyard, a high density planting with low trellising and narrow rows to replicate the tough vineyard conditions of Grand Cru Burgundy. It naturally yields at 500g/vine. This block is possibly the oldest close-planted Pinot Noir vineyard in Australia. It certainly is the best of our Pinot Noir sites: uniform, focused, powerful and fragrant, every year. It will continue to develop and drink well for ten to 15 years or more.

Pinot Noir, clone MV6 on own roots, planted in 1984 and 1986. 1.2m rows x 1.2m vine spacing. Volcanic surface material with darker clay over weathered basalt and limestone. Grapes harvested by hand 6-7/03/2018.

Wild yeast fermentation with 20% whole bunches preceded pressing to tank and settling overnight. Aging was for 10 months in French oak hogsheads (20% new). Spring malolactic fermentation was followed by racking back to tank prior to bottling in January 2019.

Blend : Pinot Noir (100%)
ABV : 13.50%
Closure : Screw Cap
Drink Until : 2028

"At some point I hit a sweet spot. I opened this and put it aside, it was a little too spicy, almost into tomato bush territory, with sappy herbs, stewed red berry fruits and somewhat prominent acidity. It was good, very, but just a bit too much hard work. I went on to other drinks, and then to a movie. When I returned, having had a break, and the wine having had a chance to settle itself – wow, the wine was beautiful. I mouthed the words True Pinot. It had been hard work because it had substance; it had become expansive, explosive with scent, wild in the mouth, celebratory of itself. I had one glass more than I should, and then another. Then I went to bed. Then I tried it again, next day, and it had faded; the flowers were no longer at their peak, Spring was gone, summer had hit. I have no doubt that this wine is going to provide joy, and much of it. But you’re going to have to pick your moment, and its. Personally I think it’s pretty much fantastic." - Campbell Mattinson (The Wine Front)

"Bright mid red colour, with a vibrant nose of lively red fruits and complexing spice, the whole bunch fermentation creates transparency and structure. This lovely wine promises enjoyment in both the short and medium term." - Bannockburn Vineyards
